Donovan McNabb and his motivations.

McNabb's motivation

POSTED: Monday, December 29, 2008, 2:03 PM
It is a dynamic as old as sports, the circling of the wagons (or, in the modern day, the circling of the Escalades). A pro team comes back from a rough patch and declares that everybody was against them all along, that nobody believed but the people in the dressing room. You have heard it a million times.

You aren't really hearing it from this Eagles team, though -- except for quarterback Donovan McNabb. He is into a complete victimization-as-motivation mode. As he said after Sunday's beatdown of the Cowboys, "They've thrown me out, ran over me, spit on me, but you know what, I continue to prevail. I kept my chin high, staying positive and making sure that the guys in this locker room understand that if given the opportunity we would take full advantage of it; that last week just wasn't us, and if anything worked in our favor with all these scenarios, I would not let them down."

Spit? Well, OK.

Whatever it takes.

Some people are insulted by all of this. That's a little short-sighted. Because McNabb has been criticized through the years -- never more so, at least implicitly, as when Eagles coach Andy Reid benched him at halftime against Baltimore last month.

I've said this before and I'll say it again: this man has always used criticism as fuel. Even if he is embellishing or inventing a little here, well, so what?  He has been  inconsistent  this season.  The benching was entirely deserved even  if the timing was lousy -- I mean, what chance did Kevin Kolb have against that Ravens defense without any pre-game preparation?

Three things happened after that day: Brian Westbrook got healthier, the play-calling got adjusted, and McNabb settled down. And if McNabb is fueled now, increasingly, energizingly, by whatever criticism has come his way, that's all good. If he wants to point at the name on his jersey after a big play, that's all good, too.

Right?

First, let's get it straight. McNabb plays for the money just like every other player, not for the city. His comments do not bother me in the least. He should have said that most of the WIP crowd are frontrunners but some are loyal. He is a guilty of the generalizations as Jimmy Rollins was. Rollins can say what he wants...he has a ring. As far as McNabb...whatever gets him through the day. But let's remember, he has never won a tilte. I am much more concerned that the Eagles owe the city $8.5 Million then whether or not they make it to the Super Bowl.

Snook65,you think McMartyr is teasing our weak minds during his news conferences now? This is getting hilarious. This idiot didn't know the overtime rule and he scored a 14 on the Wonderlic test for God's sake. You're giving him WAY too much credit.

RICH, THE EAGLES HAD NO CHANCE TO BEAT BALTIMORE AT HOME LAST MONTH WITH MCNABB OR KLOB AT QB. IT WAS PERFECT THAT MCNABB WAS BENCHED. HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BENCHED THE WEEK BEFORE AT CINCY. MCNABB WILL ALWAYS WHINE. THAT'S WHAT HE DOES BEST BESIDES PLAY QUARTERBACK. I'M NOT SAYING THE EAGLES SHOULD CHANGE QB'S, JUST THAT MCNABB WHINES ALL THE TIME. AT LEAST HE FINALLY REGISTERED TO VOTE AT AGE 31 AND HAS LEARNED THERE ARE TIES DURNING THE REGULAR NFL SEASON.

Thank you, Sil C., for summing it all up perfectly. For those who missed it, please reread: "There sure are a lot of hypocrite fans out there who attack McNabb for his "hypersensitivity" while simultaneously whining like babies themselves because they feel "insulted" or "disrespected" by his comments. Suck it up, losers. If dwelling on grievances helps McNabb to motivate himself and play better, then I say insult us as much as you want, Donovan. At least he's doing it for a constructive purpose, not solely because his feelings are hurt like some of you crybabies here. Real football fans care about winning ballgames, not quotes in the paper."

D MAC has gotten worse for the past 5 years. You can't be called great when you only show up to play at half the games. The defense won that game yesterday. He's to shallow that Andy's benching of him is what he needed to get his head on straight. But he is still way better than Kolb.

"The Idle Rich" What an appropriate name for a garbage article- Definition of Idle- Of no importance; useless; worthless; vain; trifling; thoughtless; silly. Rich, you and smallwood are pure cowards- if you make a mistake, or say something you regret, admit it- no, you can't do that; you're perfect, right? Fans dream that you, smallwood, brookover, and conlin are sentenced to purgatory, where you are punished by being forced to read each other's stupid articles for eternity.

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
