Haven't had a chance to write much about the big wet kiss that the Eagles gave Donovan McNabb last week. We all know the basics: that the Eagles threw about $5 million at their quarterback, in the year after he was benched and felt disrespected by the club, in an attempt to keep everybody happy and on the same page as they make another run at that elusive Super Bowl. And that's all fine.

Much has been made about how both remaining years of the contract were adjusted. The key provisions for 2010 are these: that $3.5 million of the money that season is guaranteed (none was guaranteed in the previous deal), and that there is a $6.2 million roster bonus that kicks in if McNabb is indeed on the roster on May 5, 2010.

Odd date, that May 5th. My first thought was that it was after the draft -- but, strangely, a few weeks after the draft. Now comes word that the draft might be moved to the first weekend in May next year, which means it will be only a couple of days after the draft. Interesting.

It seems to me that the draft will be the decision point for the club. At that time, McNabb either will be traded or have his deal extended.

People have said that this new contract gives McNabb two years to win the Super Bowl or be gone. I really see it as one year. I cannot imagine the Eagles would allow McNabb to play into the last year of his deal. Elite quarterbacks just don't do that, especially in a media market such as this one. Think about the furor that arose this off-season, the constant discussion and potential distraction, when McNabb had 2 years left on his deal. Can you imagine him playing a season with the contract set to expire at the end? I can't.

Think of how McNabb has dealt with this kind of thing. He was really insulted last season by the benching (and played better after it). But his demeanor has been off ever since then. He has become very hard to read, at least from this distance. Maybe he and the club are fine and the rest of this is just public relations, but I don't know. Something seemed to change with that benching -- and if McNabb were allowed to play into the last year of his deal, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine about how it would affect him.

I think we're all going to be back in the same spot next spring. I really think the Eagles, in buying McNabb's happiness, bought only 1 year of peace.

Rich I really don't like your reporting/writing BUT I think you got this one dead nuts right on.... It is a true Joe Banner deal and it now makes sense.....He had money under the cap...he kept Donovan smiling ....and we all know he is our best chance to win....and Joe, our defacto GM gets to deceide the following year...due to health, injury or perfomance issues McNabb may or may not be here.......The Joe Banner "control" has been re-established/enforcedand and we know he takes no prisoners.........and if we don't win it all this year.....Curt Warnere's age will show.....we let Number 5 go to Arizona for draft choices and Kolb gets his chance under Andy........ ...and to play it further....if 2010 does not go well, then "Andy will be released or Kolb will go.....

Um, Rich, it is an issue when you guys make it an issue, you are the ones constantly yammering on and baiting the front office, Andy, and Donovan into talking about the contract. Donovan said ONCE in the offseason he wanted to talk about his contract, based on feeling slighted about the benching. They redid the deal. Whether or not it was fully to his liking, well thats for only those at the negotiating table to know, but he accepted it. So it should only become an issue again when YOU THE MEDIA, ask him about it. Now if Donovan was like Chad Johnson, Anquan Boldin, or Jay Culter, and constantly talking about his deal, I could see your concern, but he said something once, and then was consistantly baited by the media, who love to stir up controversey and anti-McNabb sentiment to get the idiots over at WIP something to talk about.

PEACE?....Tell that to Paul Domowitch who posted an article on this SAME SITE TODAY stating "No gaurantees that McNabb will be here in 2010." Hahaha. 1 year of peace. Paul proved you wrong. Make up your next bit of news, because this prediction is wrong due to your peers.

Greg, nice post. And what incredible insight by lonelyboy... a brilliant move by Banner and Laurie to put pressure on 5 because "his history is not good when the heat is on." So that's their strategy for...what? You, sir, are a pathetic broken record who posts the same drivel time and time again. Turn off your computer and mom's basement lights and go outside for some color. The media in this town has to fabricate stories because nobody wants to talk to them.

KK..there is no shred of evidence anywhere on tape that he is anyone's QB of the future. Geez Bradley picks him off once a day. Who knows what life after AR and #5 brings. One thing for sure is Banner / Lurie will have pressure once their stooges are gone

Drivel, pure drivel. Mr. Hoffman, there is no positivity in your articles. It almost seems like you'd rather p*ss and moan. You suck bro.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
