This is awful, as anybody who knows Jim Johnson can tell you. Even if you only know of him, the news of his leave of absence to resume chemotherapy treatments just grabs the air out of your chest. This is a good man, and a tough man, and the idea that he is involved in this kind of a struggle is disheartening. If prayers and good wishes and hopeful thoughts matter, Johnson will get through this -- because his friends and admirers in a tough business are legion.

In the meantime, Sean McDermott runs the Eagles' defense. He is young, only just 35, but he has been in the building for 11 years now. He actually pre-dates Andy Reid, arriving as an assistant in the scouting department in 1998. When Reid got here, McDermott became assistant to the head coach. Those are great stepping-stone jobs in the NFL -- you see everything and learn everything and work your ass off, and then you work your way up from there. This is what McDermott has done, from quality-control coach (another work-your-ass-off/learn-the-business job), to coaching both the secondary and the linebackers with the Eagles.

Is McDermott ready? You never know until you know, obviously, but it is hard to believe somebody could be better prepared to run this system. And if track record matters, people named Leslie Frazier, Ron Rivera, Steve Spagnuolo and John Harbaugh (for a season) have all worked under Jim Johnson and all gone on to success in other places. We all have talked and written in the past about the connection Johnson has had with his players, but there is a clear connection with his coaches, too.

Again: you never know until you know. But as we wait and hope for Johnson's return, there is every reason to believe that Jim has taken care of the interim as he now takes care of himself.

I'm a die hard Eagles fan, but health always is #1 for any person, and I hope Jim gets well for his own sake and family. Maybe his other family in Philadelphia will make him proud this season! I'll pray for you Jim and we would be blessed to see you on the sideline again. Take care.

Jim, I apologize to you on behalf of all the mindless writers in this city. Having been in this city as long as you have, I am sure you are aware of the across the board incompetence so eloquently shown here by Mr. Hoffman. His lack of insight into anything sports related really is amusing, in a sad kind of way. Good luck in your battle, Jim. And try not to let these dopes get you down. I am sure you won't.

Thanks Rick - really liked what you had to say about Jim Johnson - we all have our thoughts and prayers for his recovery. In the meantime, it is nice to know that Sean McDermott is ready to fill some very big shoes.

thingfish I think you are the dope here. First off Hoffman clearly says how great Jim Johnson is, how awful it is that he's sick and wishes him well, what's your beef? Second, You really think Jim Johnson is gonna take the time to read your BS appology?

We're looking forward to when you get back, JJ. You're the best in the business. McDermott will do a great job of holding down the fort for you.

First and foremost we all want JJ to get well and get back soon, but I believe the Eagles D is left in capable hands with McDermott. It was McDermott who chewed Quinton Demps out after the his bad late-hit penalty in the NFC championship. He's got a fire in his belly and commands the respect of the defense, all at the age of 35! He is going to be a fixture in this town for a long time to come

and why do good people like Jimmy Johnson and Farrah Fawcett get stricken with these horrible diseases? Can any of you holy rollers explain that to me? I mean, other than to say there must be a reason, or to test someone's strenght? That's crapola.

Well, thingfish, I believe JJ's began as a skin cancer that metastasized and lodged in a lumbar vertebra. Spending too much time in the sun without a sun-block is a recipe for trouble later in life. Unknown to me what caused FF's condition. If she has had a promiscuous life-style, there are sarcomas and carcinomas that are a consequence to that. Also, humans can be very good people yet suffer greatly. My Mom was sent home to die with cancer. She was told she had two weeks to live. Her friend took her to the Mother Katharine Drexel Shrine on the way home. She was too weak to make the walk from the car to the Shrine. The Sister took her luggage and placed it on the Shrine. My Mom started to get better that week. That miracle was 20 years ago. She founded a Cancer Survivors Group and served the cause for all these years. Many friends she buried along the way, but she held their hands and comforted them as they passed. Life is tough and not for sissy's. We will all pass over one day. What we want to hear from Him is "Well done, good and faithful servant. Your suffering is over. Come in to your eternal rest".

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
