Phils manager Charlie Manuel has played the first card of Game 5 1/2 of the World Series: After the Phillies hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, Ryan Madson will be first out of the bullpen in the top of the seventh.

"Madson will start the game for us," Manuel said, at a pre-mid-game press conference, undoubtedly the first ever press conference he has ever done in the middle of the sixth inning.

"He's got experience, and a couple of years ago he was a starter," Manuel said. "He go in like 20-something games as a starter. And like I said, he's got experience. He's been throwing the ball real good. I think from a mindset he also knows that, we've just got actually three innings for our bullpen to pitch.

"So it's kind of a mindset thing, but I think when you look at it, he's got to get three outs or four outs or whatever, five outs. Whatever. However long we leave him in."

Madson has been amazing. Pitch him until he tires and then bring Lights out Lidge in

Fine with me as long as Romero and Eyre are warming up too.

I think that's good news, pretty much what I expected.

Making noise
We've already been cheated. They should restart the game entirely and play next Monday so Hamels can pitch. They shouldve never started Monday's game at all. 2 and a half innings of baseball is gonna be terrible.

Making noise: your opinion sounds like it came from a fourth grader who attends one of our city's public schools

let's not shoot everything in this ballgame. Madson, eyre, romero, let's try to limit Lidge to 3 outs. And that way if it does continue, westill have a bullpen.

Call me crazy (and you wouldn't be the first) but I would absolutely not pinch hit for Hamels. I'd let him bat, even if he's not going to throw a pitch, just to get into Tampa Bay's head. Sure it may be a waste of an out, but the ballpark would go completely crazy, wouldn't it?

I would save Madson for the 8th, if the Phillies do not score in the bottom of the 6th, and it remains a tie game. Madson goes in if we get a lead. Don't forget, there's the possibility of extra innings. And you don't want to use all your bullets and tire Madson for two innings, since the potential games 6 and 7 are tomorrow night and Friday.

Why would we pitch Madson in the 8th where he'd have to face 3 consecutive lefties in the 9 hole pinch hitter, Iwamura, and Crawford? Makes no sense. He should be pitching the 7th where he'll have favorable matchups, and then we get Eyre and Romero ready for the 8th.

Yeah, let's let Hamels hit. Then we can bring in Myers after him. Maybe Moyer has another single left in him.

I will definitely tape Game 5b on my DVD recorder so I can replay the final 3.5 innings. Need some runs right away. Go Phillies!

A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
