Giants' reaction to Vick

Tom Coughlin wonders, like the rest of us.

Giants' reaction to Vick

POSTED: Friday, August 14, 2009, 1:06 PM

It was just a coincidence, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, that he had his defense practicing against the Wildcat offense on the morning after the Eagles signed Michael Vick.

"It was," Coughlin said. "It really was. These schedules are made well in advance."

He wasn't lying -- the practice schedule was probably drawn up in the spring sometime. But the conversation will continue on two levels here, and it will continue for months that way. On the one hand, Vick did jail time for his involvement in a dog-fighting scheme that including drowning and electrocuting the animals. On the other hand, the guy is a football player and he will create some issues for opposing defenses once he is on the field.

"I have no idea what their plans are," Coughlin said. "We play Philadelphia relatively middle and late, so hopefully we’ll have a chance to see what their plan is by then and be prepared for it. But I think it’s something that because it was introduced to the league and because so many people got involved in it, we had planned to work against it as best we could in training camp. Even if it’s just to show everybody what basically the offense is, what the combinations of plays are."

Meanwhile, general manager Jerry Reese was asked if this made the Eagles better.

"Oh, I don’t know that," Reese said "…Who knows? I’m happy that he’s got a second chance to move on in his life and again, I wish him the best except when he plays us.

Two tracks, two separate conversations. Months to go.

If you go to a game, take a Vick "chew toy", and toss it on the field! Jeffrey Dahmer started with animals too!

Whats up Philly! I'm from the ATL and I used to be a Falcons fan. Today I am an Eagles fan! I don't think you all know what u just got! Ask real ATL fans what u got. The Falcons now have 7 home games and our Eagles now have 9. Atl is all about Vick. He put our organization on the map. He is electric and a true superstar in this league. Be patient with him and give him time and you will be wowed. People in ATL are under the impression that Philadelphia has the worst fans in all of sports. Booed Santa, jeered an injured Michael Irvin, got rid of Barkley, A.I. and boo McNabb constantly (don't understand that). Right now McNabb is a better QB than Vick and has been. Vick is the better football player. With McNabb and Reid working with Vick to attain more quarterbacking skills the skys are the limits. You got Vick for 1.6M. Thats a lick! We gave him 13M per. He was worth every penny. The Falcons had 50,000 on the waiting list for tickets when Vick was here. Now, even with a playofff team, the Falcons have to give away tickets to sellout. The only current game sold out for the Falcons this year is Dec. 6 against our Eagles. The Falcons went 14-2 and made a superbowl appearance in 1998 and only sold out the last few games when people realized we were good. The following year the Falcons could not sell out a game. Then Vick came. Then came sellouts. Then came Monday Night Football. Then came Thanksgiving football. Then came Sunday Night Football. While this was taking place money was being generated by the city and the downtown area around the GA Dome was totally renovated. He was positive in the community with his charities and his entrepruenership (not bankrolling dogfighting). The only problem one can have with one Mr. Vick (besides his henous acts) is he is an urban, black athlete. He's hip-hoppish. Ok. He's a God-fearing human who errored and is attempting to right his wrong. What kind of person would deny someone the chance to do right?MV7 God bless u all!

The Eagles will do very well this season as long as the injuries do not continue to pile up.

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
