Gammons: Phils MUST get Halladay
ESPN's baseball guru does his bit for the Jays.
Gammons: Phils MUST get Halladay
Rich Hofmann, Daily News Sports Columnist
ESPN's Peter Gammons says that the Phillies must get Roy Halladay.
Well, at least the headline of his blog says it. A fair summation of his position comes at the end of the post:
From this view, however, Halladay isn't like anyone else. If the Phillies get to the World Series for three straight years, it will be the greatest run in franchise history. And, sorry, there's only one Roy Halladay. If you can't pay for him with Kyle Drabek, try Visa.
Right there is the entire issue. Gammons has crystallized it and he also has managed to trumpet what is undoubtedly the position of Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi. If you read the Gammons piece, you can see that, in his view, it is unclear that anybody else has the cash or the prospects to make a deal. So why would the Phillies essentially bid against themselves and offer Drabek, their best minor-league pitching prospect?
Here is another question that nobody seems to ask. If the Phillies have no interest in doing an extension with Halladay, why would he agree to a trade? He can wait -- it isn't as if his value is going down. And if you are the Blue Jays, and you know that Halladay will be looking for his last big contract as a part of this transaction -- that's only logical, isn't it? -- then won't there be many more teams in a position to do something in the off-season, at a time when you can clear salary in a more orderly way and prepare yourself to make Halladay a contract offer?
Still many questions, with 10 days until the deadline.
Gammons is a constipated old goat who picks the Yankees and Red Sox and Dodgers to win all the time. He always picks against the Phightins' and he's always wrong. He's also wrong in this instance. Why would the Phils bid against themselves when no one else is coming up with the goods. The Jays just turned down the Mets package and no one's offering anything. CC Sabathia did well for the Brewers last year but that wasn't enough to get past the Phils. Offer Carrasco, Donald and Knapp. Otherwise I'm going to continue to enjoy my first place team unlike the rest of you "leave in the 7th inning" fans. Get over it. The Phils won!!! They're still winning so stop your whining and get a life. Phillyexp
jim7390: what are you talking about... the phillies were horrible in the late 80s and early 90s because they used there farm system and never traded for anybody.. they brought up pitcher after pitcher and they all had success in the minors and none in the pros.. in fact outside of hamels and schilling name one other pitcher from the minors that they have drafted that was succesful in the last 20 years.. bleed green forever
I'm in the "Phillies are bidding against themselves" school. This all in, trade anybody school is a bunch of macho b.s that works great on TV poker shows, but will bankrupt your team over the long haul. Amberjack
We do not know precisely which players or how many the Blue Jays want for Halladay, and thus we cannot say whether the deal is sound or not. Moreover, Halladay has a clause in his contract: if he is traded, he can opt for Free Agency at the end of the season in which he is traded, which means we rent him for three months and he could be gone, and Toronto will not let us negotiate with him before the trade. As for the Phillies having room to take on salary, do they? Happ and prospects cost nothing, Halladay will cost at least $6 million this year and $15 million next. The Phillies have been generous to their core players of late, but they do not like to throw too much cash around. They are not the Yankees or Red Sox in that regard. My guess is that they will not get Halladay but will go after a cheaper addition to the rotation, a right-handed bat on the bench and bullpen help. Right now the biggest concern from my perspective is the erratic Brad Lidge. Closers are the key to success for any tean vying for the playoffs: Broxton, Papelbon, Rivera, for exasmple. chuckw
phillyexp: thank you for showing that you know nothing about baseball.. one gammons picked the phillies to repeat in the beggining of the season.. (espn magazine april) the mets never offered toronto anything,.. in fact they announced a few weeks ago that they didnt want him.. unless they traded santana it would be impossible for them to afford him.. the dodgers and giants are persuing halladay very aggressivly according to MLB.com but do not have what the phillies have.. bottom line.. if he goes to LA or SAn fran, season over we can not compete with either of those pitching staffs.. they have the goods they need to get him and make this team a favorite for the nest 5 years.people also need to stop talking about halladay as a liability... drabek had tommy john a little over a year ago.. one more arm injury and his carrer is over...anyone that thinks happ and halladay are the same.. i will not respond to you because you should legally have to wear a helmet.... bleed green forever
If we are willing to part with Carrasco, Donald, Knapp and Carpenter we should be able to trade for Holiday or another top line starter. jss31
bleed green: san fran wouldnt have the offense to keep up with the phillies...as good as that pitching staff might be should they add halladay you still have to score runs and the phils pitching as of late would easily shut them down...la could be a different story cuz of their offense but the phils have also seen this team and should beat them again...you keep happ..id rather see drabek go than happ and you certainly dont trade both of them cuz thats too much...as much as id hate to see taylor go with the potential he shows and drabek as well if it means halladay at this point then go for it..marson unfortunately is prolly outta here too PhillySports23
As much as I want Halladay, you cannot just give up your entire future. Remember, Sabathia didn't take the Brewers out of the first round last year, so there are no guarantees. Perhaps Happ's sucess will allow Ruben to sell him while his stock price is high, and maybe allow us to keep Drabek, because if he does turn out to be the next Seaver, or even Schilling, and we trade him, the decision will be looked at like the decisions to trade Ferguson Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg. I'd offer Happ, either Taylor or Brown, Donald and either Carrasco, Marson or Savery. Any more, I'd pass. Be aggressive, let the market for Halladay play itself out. If nobody else wants to overpay, then we shouldn't have to either. twalesi
bleed green - you are partially correct -Jon Heyman reported that Toronto approached the Mets with that offer. I think that indicates Toronto would really only want to trade him to the N.L. He also states that Phils/Toronto have discussed a package of Carrasco/Taylor/Donald. Also, I agree if the Dodgers get him, it will be difficult to get back to W.S. Of course, the only he goes there if LA parts with Kershaw, and I am not sure LA would make that deal. Same could be said for S.F. - they would prob have to include Cain in the deal. I am OK with trading Drabek, but not selling the farm and including Drabek, Taylor, and Brown in the same deal. Also to those who say Marson is struggling, he is hitting over .300 at AAA, even after his slow start. His power numbers aren't there, but I wouldn't call any .300 hitter struggling. Carrasco has 107k's in 108 innings, and shows flashes of brillance at times. These two guys are very much in play in this deal (although Toronto has a good C prospect in AAA). If Donald was healthy and playing well he would def help get this deal done w/out including Drabek. Our minor league system is deep enough with prospects that it's very possible to get this deal done by excluding our top 3 guys. I wouldn't be surprised if Toronto wants Happ, just to replace Halladay's spot in the rotation for this year and next. dankil13- For the sake of argument, let's say the Phils trade Drabek and he goes on to have a good career (15 wins a year for 12 years). Now let's say Halladay comes over here and wins 25 games over the course of this season and next and also gives you a handful of wins in the postseason, possibly another title. I take that deal. If Halladay re-ups for three more years with the Phils, that's icing. jpk
phillysports: i see your point with san fran, but with a one two punch of linniicum and halladay, i really see us having a hard time producing runs... they could easliy go down 2-0 in a series with them... but you are right i am not sure that the giants can produce many runs against us, but if we have halladay that wouldnt even be a series...that is the point of all of this.. no matter how you look at it halladay makes the phillies a better team.. i know happ has been amazin, but so was kyle kendrick last year..(11 wins at the all star break.) and now we could give him away.. happ has not proven enough to be untouchable... but if we could part ways with drabek instead of happ i am all for it.. drabek is a lose cannon with a libility in that arm... bleed green forever

Can't depend on the pitching like we could last year. We need to get Halladay. ematusko
