Eagles swimming in cap space
Eagles still have a ton of cash.
Eagles swimming in cap space
Rich Hofmann, Daily News Sports Columnist
From Mike Florio at profootballtalk.com comes this latest accounting of cap space around the National Football League.
In a shocking development, the Eagles have a ton: $23.1 million, fifth most in the NFL.
Months ago, club president Joe Banner said the Eagles couldn't possibly spend it all, and he is proving to be accurate. The Eagles will not be able to spend it all. They have enough cash to go out and make another move, if that is their desire. They have enough money to make another move and to extend Donovan McNabb, if that is their desire. They can make another move, extend Donovan McNabb and Sheldon Brown and drop hundred dollar bills from a helicopter and still have money left over to stuff into a very comfortable mattress.
You know what the saddest part of going into an uncapped year in 2010 will be -- if that, indeed, is the result of the collective bargaining negotiations that are supposedly going to begin in the coming months. If the NFL loses its salary cap, it will lose this readily-available accounting of who is spending what. It will leave us all without anything to talk about -- except the run-pass ratio.
No Rollover Minutes? WHAAAAAAAT???? Brand83187
get lebron james next year..forget mcnabb. hueyd
Too bad FA talent in the NFL sucks so there is no one to spend it on. PhillyPhantastico
If the eagles were to come out and say we will not spend $10 million and as a result we can refund $5 per ticket to the fans, they would be crusified. the really ugly truth is the cap has outgrown the revenue stream. More and more of the teams are not spending the cap, because they understand they let things get out of control. The fans can only offer up so much and when fans can not longer go the the games, loyalty will drift. the NFL is built an loyal fans and the Banners in the league know that. given that, lets trade mcNabb and dump his contract on someone else. dutchman
A couple of things regarding NFL salary: #1. It is correct that an NFL team cannot DIRECTLY transfer cap dollars from one year to the next. However, a team CAN transfer cap dollars one year to the next through creative use of LTBE incentives. Here is an article from last year about this: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/reuben_frank/03/01/cap.figures/ --- #2. Since the Eagles are MASTERS at manipulating the salary cap, they actually have ended up as one of the TOP spenders in the NFL since the year 2000 (ACTUAL Dollars, NOT Cap Dollars). Don't believe me? Do the math for yourself. Just add up all of the team dollars from 2000 through 2008 (http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2000 ~through~ http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/totalpayroll.aspx?year=2008). While the Eagles are RARELY in the top 5 in any given year, only one team has spent more than the Eagles in that time period: the Washington Redskins. In an Ironic twist: the Eagles are actually under the Salary cap, NOT because they are CHEAP, but because they actually like to SPEND MONEY! Just take a look at some of the Free Agent and Trade moves that they have made in the last two seasons: Asante Samuel, Jason Peters, Stacy Andrews, Sean Jones, and Leonard Weaver. The ACTUAL issue with the Eagles is NOT that they are Cheap, it's that ALL of their spending has still failed to win them a Super Bowl. knighn
First off, there is NO reason to sign McNabb to any kind of extension. He is still under a contract that pro-rated makes him among the top 3-5 QB's in the league when his statistics haven't supported the contract as of late. I am impressed with the moves we made this offseason with Weaver, the offensive line and drafts picks but if we have the money and have a chance to put ourselves over the top, why not go for it? Try to sign Boldin who would give McNabb a top receiver and totally LOAD the offense. Imagine the nightmares that defensive coordinators around the league would have trying to prepare for McNabb, Boldin, DeSean, a healthy Westbrook, Curtis, McCoy, and Maclin, etc. It would be brutal. Not to mention we should have better blocking up front and exceptional field position with Maclin and DeSean on special teams. A player like Boldin could put the team over the top and keep us stacked for the uncapped year. Do it this season when we have a legitimate chance. You know that during an uncapped year teams like Dallas, Washingtown, etc. will be spending every dime to try to put them over the top. blackknight
Why in the world would they want to extend a fat old tired 'product of the system' choke artist QB like Mcnabb when he still is under contract? Thank God fans are not running the Eagles... | Golf Outlets | | top19site

So does this mean the Eagles will finally pay the $8,000,000 past due owed to the City of Philadelphia? Marchus
I'm a big fan of the Eagles' cap-strategy. I believe it's the right way to stay competitive in a league with no guarantees. But I gotta say...the list has all the SB winners at the opposite end. I'm pretty sure that's a new development.Maybe that's what happens after you win a SB? aa2or
The Eagles may not have the "perfect " roster, but we've been sitting around these past few days talking about the roster and the depth at every position. The Eagles have so many quality players at every position that, barring injuries, they are going to end up cutting quality players on both sides of the ball. They will probably end up having to cut veterans or draft picks on the offensive and defensive lines. Go to the depth chart and see who you would cut if they picked up over-the-hill veterans like McAllister. Maybe there's a reason the Cardinals let him go and drafted a rookie back. The Eagles, as they do most years, will end up using the money for extensions duting the season to players who fit into their future. Duracorr
under Banner, Lurie and the Chubbster, the Eagles will not win a championship. Huge

Eagles Nation: You can't "save up" from one cap year to transfer to another. True, cap space does not carry over. However, the NFL isn't giving teams 112 million to spend. It comes out of the owners' pockets (minus revenue sharing). So, if they don't spend 25 mil this year, it's money they would have to spend next year, effectively "saving up for 2010." Wish people would think a little bit before bringing down other people in the comments msf29- The NFL salary cap not only has a cap ceiling, but a cap FLOOR, which is 87.6% of the cap ceiling. The salary cap for 2009 (according to wikipedia) is $128 mil., which means the cap floor is $112.1 mil. Teams MUST spend to the cap floor, per NFL rules and if the Eagles are $23.1 mil under the cap, they MUST spend $7.2 to reach the cap floor. I'm not sure how much they'll spend on signing draft picks, but don't be surprised if the total amount is JUST above $7.2 mil to get over the cap floor. awl
toss a little money at sheldon? whyseguy
As cheap as Banner is, the extra cap space is just the way they like it. igglegreen

If next year is uncapped, I will have to stop watching football. I will not be able to watch Jerry Jones buy a Superbowl. If this happens, get ready to watch the same thing happen to Football that has happened to MLB. There will be a hand full of teams that can compete, another that are unwilling to spend, and a whole bunch that will be at the bottom. SlinkTMP
Peppers or Parker? DO IT!!!!! bigphillydad
What's new? The Eagles short-changing the fans ... shocker!!! There is no reason to be that far under the cap unless you have the PERFECT team. They don't. Copper34
training camp is only 2 months away. yeah baby MJPD345
But when you spend 'cap room' in the form of contracts that does increase the amount of the payroll - thus reducing available money that year...then you must purge players to find money, and upset team chemistry (see Redskins). What's wrong with a business making a profit?...you don't have to spend it just because it's there. ziggy- And maybe Chan Ho Park to fire slants...into Eagles WRs' helmets. jamesiri
- And maybe Chan Ho Park to throw slants. jamesiri
- Best use: hire Dalembert off the Sixers to block field goals. jamesiri
Comment removed.- i like the deuce mccallister pick up...a nice vet to back up a proven starter in westbrook and a phenom rookie...the vet is the next thing we need at rb...and deuce can pound the rock...booker can sit and watch at home...or get traded with reggie brown for a stud defensive end somewhere... teenwolf
Having that much cap room is akin to not using your time outs...stupid. Hey, we could have signed TO again...HA! psuwelsh
They know what they are doing. We will need to upgrade trent cole and bradley soon enough. We will be able to get players next year. Trade up in draft and sign a top 5 pick. fman727
mikerainey, I guess they thought it was like rollover minutes! scars73

What is J.Pepper's status? HIM we could use. Tracer41
Good news. We are loaded for the draft next year and have enough money to still be players in FA next year if we want to be. beeron
Pick up Deuce McAllister for some chump change at least! fineedge1- I think it's obvious this team knows more than some of you simpletons out there. They have a plan, and most of you can't get it through your skulls that they are not going to broadcast it or display it on a billboard outside the stadium. And please, please, please - get off the Boldin ideas. Boldin is not coming to Philly...period.
If those numbers are correct, then the Eagles need to spend about $4 million to reach the salary floor, which is $107,748,000. That can easily be done with one contract extension. I'd say probably someone like Mikell, Stewart Bradley, Max Jean Gilles, or Abiamiri. Or maybe even Ellis Hobbs. They just traded for him and he's a FA next year mikeyhigs

Give me a 5 year 20 Million Dollar contract, I'll praise the team for the whole 5 yrs. and won't complain about anything, wouldn't think of asking for a new contract, yada, yada, yada!!! FireChief- hopefully they are saving up for 2010... hopefully...
There's no sense in saving money if somebody you covet is available for it. I can't help but think that with this roster you will STILL need a solid, veteran, large-bodied pass catcher for down deep on the other end of the field. That is if Andy and the bean counters are going to go balls-to-the-wall for a Super Bowl berth this coming season. (And an addition to the D-front would be a good idea too.) TBear

McNabb has done enough that the Eagles should re-do his contract. Why not? They sure have the money to do it. I still think The Cards don't want to pay Boldin. The Eagles should stick with it and get Boldin and re-do his contract too. drjimmy
restruct 5's contract...especially if they win it all! If they win it all he's earned the right to finish out his career here!! jthomas40
