Little of it was pretty. Much of it was brutal, and brutally tough.  But in the end, the Eagles went on the road and beat the Minnesota Vikings in their NFC wildcard game, 26-14. And now it's on to a divisional playoff game against the New York Giants, next Sunday at the Meadowlands.

Style points were not awarded, not that it mattered. The big play came in the fourth quarter, when Brian Westbrook turned a fairly-innocent looking screen pass into a 71-yard touchdown. Westbrook's day had been their day: pounding their heads against the Vikings' front wall, pounding but not producing for a long time. Quarterback Donovan McNabb turned the ball over twice, on a fumble and an interception. Westbrook's TD was the only offensive touchdown of the game.

The other scores came on four David Akers field goals in the first half, including a 51-yarder, and a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown by Asante Samuel. It was the kind of play that the Eagles envisioned when they signed him: poaching on a terribly-underthrown pass and making the Vikings pay.

The Eagles held a 16-14 lead at halftime and all through the third quarter and into the fourth. It was a really rugged game. The Vikings converted a lot of third downs on offense, and stuck with their running game a lot, and were on the field a lot. But the Eagles' defense, so strong down the stretch, stood tough again in a physical, pounding kind of game.
And now come the Giants, in a division game with enormous stakes, in another game that is likely to be just as physically tough as this one.

In a way, this was perfect preparation for the Meadowlands.

Got to give Reid credit, he stuck with the run, even though it wasn't getting anything. This at least opened up the middle of the D for some recievers middle routs. I would still like to see more of Buck. Good win, let's hope we duplicate it again next week!

Bring on the Giants! Way to go Eagles for shoving that stupid Viking horn down Minnesota's ******! The only worthwhile thing in Minnesota is that Mary Tyler Moore statue. Serves them right for voting for a freak like Al Franken......

The Steelers won every game on the road when the won the super bowl about 3 years ago. I'm not comparing the eagles to them but it can be done!! GO EAGLES!!!

Lonewolf, are you aware that the last Superbowl champ won three road games to do it? What makes you think the 07-08 Giants are any better then the 08-09 Eagles? Have some faith brother.

Mixing it up kept the Vikings' D, (and any other D), guessing. With Westbrook and Buckhalter healthy, there's no stopping the Birds. I appreciate the offensive line getting it together and giving McNabb time.

Please don't let this victory hide the fact how McNabb can get chocked up in a pressure situation. It was Westbrook who dealt the killer blow today - not McNabb!!

Panthers could stay home and beat the Cardinals next week. It doesn't get much easier. They will be freshest team in NFC Championship game. They get to face a beat up Giants or Eagles team. Even if the Eagles lose next week they will lay a hurting on Giants.

No such thing as a bad win in the playoffs, especially on the road. Ask the Falcons or Colts if they would take an "ugly" road win like ours. Survive and advance. If we want to win it all we need to beat the best and the giants are the champs so they are the best until we knock them off next Sunday. GO BIRDS!!!

Next week will be tougher, but the Eagles did well. McNabb, ever the class act, really came through in this one, time and again. His timely passes kept the field position game in good order.

Lonely-wife, why the civil comments now? And why have you demoted Eli again? He's gone from the best QB in footbal to "much better" than Tavares? Whew! I'm getting dizzy from your back and forth. Then, you have the nerve to talk about the Eagles defense. Help me out here, what kind of defense does Eli's defense have? You also dogged DeSean Jackson, but he's still playing, while Peyton Manning (you're latest best QB) is watching the game from my house. I just love reading your posts! If you write it, I know it's wrong. What are you gonna say next week? I can't wait! Don't disappear again.

I agree with Gordy. Sticking with the run has many benefits, including making the passing game more effective. Nice Job Reid

I'm really starting to like this team. Say what you want about McNabb, Reid, etc. but they are a resilient bunch. They could have folded when the chips were down this season but they came back with a fury. Bet all the yahoos who have been calling Samuel overpaid and overrated feel pretty dumb right about now. That guy is a gamer. The Eagles are playing really well right now and have as good of a chance as anyone to win this whole thing.

fools gold people, eagles get dump trucked by the G man next week, over bt the end of the 3rd qtr. Dump Reid, Keep Mcnabb, the game they just won should have been a blowout, left points all over the place, Fade to Baskett? Westy in Slot? Buck as RB? Vike QB is a career backup Giants wont make those mistakes. The Reid era needs to end!

Cobol: Not McNabb's great but it's hard to argue with a guy who threw for almost 300 yards and completed 67 percent of his passes. Ease up, will ya?

Geez, Clownwolf says it's very hard for a road team to win its second road game. Guess the Birds should just fold the tent and forfeit. Clownie, I finally see why you know so much about being a McSoftee.

I join with everybody giving Reid props for sticking with the run. Why no more of Buckhalter, though? Isn't he a fine change of pace for Westbrook, making it harder for defenses to time up BWest? Just a thought as Reid and Mornhinweg gameplan for the Giants.

Outside of D- Howard does anybody else know who we may loose to F.A. on defense?

Eagle2010, you need an elementary English class as well. And, Manning isn't that great a QB. He has had some good games against the Birds, but that was with Burris.

JmH Reborn
This was a quality win with a stout Vikings defense. McNabb came up huge with clutch throws to get us in better field position. Our tackles let us down a few times in critical junctures, but they did their job with the game on the line. "McSoftee" took the hits in the pocket and made the throws. The G-men are beatable as are Carolina. I will admit we have been Heckyl and Jeckyl, but they seemed focus and may be pass that stage. Lets hope for more good graces. Go Eagles!

Our defense shut down the Vikes in the second half...next week will be a highly contested game...concentrate on stopping the run and make Eli beat you with his "arm". If the G-men somehow advance they will be too physically beat up to beat Carolina. Would love a shot at the Panthers/Cardinals winner. Go Eagles!!

Why wasn't Correll Buckhalter featured more. One carry for 27 yards and nothing else thrown or given to him. I know he was at fullback the second half, but they could have given him the ball or thrown to him a few times.

This game definitely had me doubling up on the antacids. But then again.. I might have been spoiled by the Cowboy wooping the week before. This team has what it takes to win. It has a great defense. It can stop you and and score on you.

Oh my god Lonestar just GO AWAY! Eli is better than Tavaris? Are you f*ing joking me? Go to NFL.com and check out how awesome YOUR BOY Eli is since that d-bag #17 shot himself!! Childress had to stop running the ball: the EAGLES WERE RIPPING THEM APART! You can't expect Adrian Pederson to "just break one" every now and then because when J.J. had figured it out, there was still a quarter left to play and he had to pass....which obviously didn't work without the run. Eagles earned it, although late. Their offense couldn't score in the Red Zone? I think I saw Akers take the lead and then put it away. Those are points too, no? McNABB (no more, McSoftie, he is NOT INJURED THIS YEAR) with 8 different personnel touching the football with 300 plus yards. Andy Reid sticking to the run. Our Defense is the nastiest in the NFL right now and we are further into the playoffs which is scary. Eli Manning is going to be Eli once again. And then let's say a quick prayer that The Cardinals get the miracle of the playoffs because they aren't going to get two! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!!!!!!

Wow, the Eagles look dangerous right now. I think the Hall of Fame committee needs to watch the tapes of Dawkins these past two games. He's a one man wrecking crew.

As was said, McNabb came through with a lot big passes to get out of horrid field position, again and again.

The Eagles ran the ball only 23 times. The Eagles passed or attempted to pass) nearly 62% of the time. The Eagles won the game. Aggregate statistics can be manipulated to mean just about anything. Remember that when you read the next, inevitable, pass/run article.

I think what should be added to the run/pass ratio is that horrible shotgun that they run. It seems like they're never successful out of that set.

Not a great game, but McNabb managed it very well. Took the throws that were there except on the INT. Defense did a great job of keeping the Vikes off the field when the Birds couldn't get anything going. D-Jax was superb in the return game. Overall great team effort and will need an even better effort next week. Fly Eagles, fly!

I was shocked by the disappearance of Buckhalter as well. I was expecting the coaches to use him at least early and often. I think the announcers were expecting it but the coaches somehow were not thinking of it. McNabb did play good I am still wondering after all these years why it is so hard to hit that short pass though.

Great win! For those of you who just watch and fail to consider "game plan," Westbrook was continuously run into the meat of the Vikes' line all day long until the perfect time arose for the little screen pass - then BANG!...Westbrook was contained all day long and that was part of Reid's plan, esp. in the first half, IF we could not run against them...The Vikes were lulled into thinking Westbrook would not be the guy who hurts them today...It's one of Reid's weekly strategies - if our best player is having a rough day, use him as a decoy! Go EAGLES! PK

The run defense carried the game. Shutting down Adrian Peterson like that was a phenomenal effort.I'm sure it got the Giants attention because they gave up 200 Yds to the Vikings the week before

As long as the Philadelphia Inquirer says "Eagles Win!" the next day--that's all I care about brother! Yep, playing the Giants will be trench warfare but the planets and stars had to align and comets reversed course just to get these boys in the door in the first place - the rest is destiny baby! Plus, I need a good reason to take a day off work here in VA to celebrate another sports championship in my home town. GO EAGLES!

Samuel's interception and score was terrific. His overblown celebration was pure stupidity. You can be sure the Vikings appreciated that extra 15 yards they gained on the kick-off ... so much so, they scored on that drive. Players need to exercise a little restraint and think "team" in celebrating scores.

This game was ALL about field position...McNabb made some timely throws and the receivers actually caught the ball...one thing that nobody is mentioning is the play of Brian Dawkins...he was everywhere and bringing the lumber...I thought for sure that this was going to be his last year, but after watching the inspired football he has been playing the last half a dozen games, I am not so sure...the defense gave up 1 big play...take away that and the McNabb fumble and this game isnt even close...we will need ths same defensive performance next week...LETS GO BIRDS!!!
