Eagles shortchanged by over/under
The over/under list shortchanges the Eagles.
Eagles shortchanged by over/under
Rich Hofmann, Daily News Sports Columnist
My apologies if this list has already been chewed over, but if it was, I missed it. It is annual springtime fodder, the NFL over/under list for wins in the upcoming season. I can't believe the Eagles' over/under is only 9 wins.
Just look at these three numbers:
Giants, 10.5 win.
Cowboys, 9.5 wins.
Eagles, 9 wins.
Maybe it's because New York is a bigger market. Maybe it's because everybody follows the Dallas Cowboys. Maybe the totals of those two teams are over-inflated as a result. I don't know. But I have a hard time seeing it. When the games mattered last year, when the final accounting was done, a schizophrenic Eagles team was better than the Cowboys and beat the Giants at the Meadowlands in the playoffs -- and, on top of that, the Eagles have remade their offense in an attempt to remove some of the schizophrenia.
I know, I know, I'm counting on Jason Peters being a player at left tackle, and Leonard Weaver at fullback, and LeSean McCoy at backup running back. But McCoy is the only one who doesn't have an NFL track record. It just seems to me that the Eagles have created more options for themselves to win close games, or ugly games. They won nine and tied one last year, and they lost (and tied) a number of tight and nasty games, and even if they pull out only one more of them, they're better than 9.
What am I missing?
You are missing the fact that the over/under is not a prediction of games won or lost, but where Vegas believes is the mid point to get equal bets from the betting public on both sides of the line in May. Birds won 9 games last year, so 9 games isn't a bad line. PhillyPhantastico
One observation: The Ravens are @ 8.5, even though they trounced the Birds and Dallas. PhillyPhantastico

Yes, the line is trying to get people to bet, but Rich's point is, he doesnt see how you are going to get an equal number of people to bet the under considering they had 9 wins last season, are a better team than last season, and teams they beat in the stretch run have higher over/unders. Greg S
You are missing the point that the Eagles always disappoint. Plus, we still have that #5 at QB, don't we? The Giants replaced Burress quite nicely and the Cowboys got rid of T.O., so they have both improved. Bama
There may be more consideration of the Eagle's schedule in Vegas. The Eagles (and Redskins) play several games on the West Coast, while the Giants and Cowboys don't go passed Denver, and get the west coast teams at home for the most part. I once read an article which calculated the extra wear and tear on a team that has to fly back and forth to the coasts repeatedly, and the way it screws up your post game practice schedules. The extra trips to the coast could account for the .5 to 1 game difference, plus the Eahgles play a late day game in Chicago where they haven't done well since the Fog Bowl (maybe it's Mama McNabb's saturated fat meal), even with Kyle Orten at QB. The Eagles Bye week is also quite early, so they go a long stretch in season with no breaks and a lot of long distance travel. atp2007
The sum of the NFC East lines would require the teams to go 10 games over .500 (10.5-5.5, 9.5-6.5, 9-7, 8-8). That would require a record of 25-15 in the 40 games that the teams play outside the NFC East. Take all four of them under and you stand a much better chance of going 3-1 than 1-3. chicagoB
Greg: Then Rich should bet the over. PhillyPhantastico
I'll be in Vegas in 3 weeks and am plunking down some cash on the Over. I definitly agree!!! eaglesrick
CANT WAIT TO RUN TO DELAWARE AND BET THE OVER ON THAT PROP, EZ MONEY. Onlineps2beast
this is a no brainer for us bird brains. I'm betting over! surfbruddah
Some of you guys just pull made-up stuff out of your butts, cracks me up, lol. The Eagles haven't done well in Chicago since the Fog Bowl? Interesting since last time the Eagles played in Chicago was 2004 and the Eagles won 19-9. Sorry reality conflicts with your witty remark about McNabb's mom. JimG
Bama, how did the Giants replace Burress quite nicely? tjc
JimG, Eagles lost in Chicago last year. tjc
Greg S - Who says the Eagles are better this year? How do you know that? The draft? Get a grip - 9 is about right. Everyone needs to stop with this talk about the playoffs last year. They were not a very good team for most of last year and needed a miracle to get in the post season. wokmaster

Donovan said there can't be a tie!!!! bamaphillyfan
Crusty - Which bank should I take that to..Bank of America or Citibank? You're a clueless homer. wokmaster
The Eagles will shock the world in 2010.............. The Manager
The cowgirls still got Tony Romo, so how did they get better? Roy the wideout worked out for them pretty good. When he gets hurt, whose their top wideout? RZA1217
Wokmaster...when they got in, they went to the NFC championship game. granted it was a miracle they got in, but overall it was a good season. They just forgot to defend in the championship game, mopst notably after they stopped blitzing in the 4th quarter RZA1217
since the Fog bowl on New Years Eve 88 the Eagles have been in Chi to play the Bears 7 times. Eagles 4 wins, Bears 3 wins . Also since the Fog Bowl they have played in total 10 times Eagle 6 wins, Bears 4 wins. Yeah they beat us last year, and sholdnt have but we beat them the 5 previous games. How does that equate to not doing well in Chi since the fog bowl lateofphilly
NBot only did the Eagles lose in 2008 in Chicago but they made Kyle Orten look like an All-Pro QB while doing so. Very embarassing loss. Only one other team managed to make Orten look good before the rest of the NFL figured out how to defensively shut him down. Now he's gone and they actually do have an All-Pro quarterback. atp2007- I wouldn't bet the house the Eagles win more than 9 next year. Vegas is usually pretty close, or they would have folded many years ago.

Good for us, bad for all other teams' fans. This just means I'm gonna get better odds on my preseason bet that the Birds are gonna win the Big One this year. Elagins
I'll be in Vegas at the end of August...I'll be putting some money down on the over!!! jthomas40
Phiilytrue says that "Philly is a tough place to play and part of the reason players often under-perform is fans negativity towards them." That is the biggest bunch of BS I've heard in my whole life. Do you really believe that? So the Utah Jazz should all have career years every year? The Packers should win the SB every year? Don't blame the fans for a pro player under-performing. That's why they are a PROFESSIONAL. If we're talking college sports then I might agree. You, my freind, are a stepford. wokmaster

First of all, I'm not an Eagles fan. I can look at the team objectively. They're not winning the Super Bowl but I'm sure they'll defend their crown as the salary cap champions again. Second, the Pats will win the Super Bowl this year if Brady stays healthy. wokmaster
Really? Shortchanged? 2008 Records--Birds 9-6-1 (tied the Bengals and lost to the Skins 10-3 while still in control of their own playoff destiny in the 2nd to last game). Giants 12-4 Dallas 9-7 And everyone has pointed out already how the betting works so you'll get the myopic Giant and Cowboy fans split equally in the betting. I'll take the over on the Eagles. MidGreen
Remember, the Vegas line on 9 wins might mean, example, you put up $100.00 to win $90.00. I have played these lines before and they have it down pretty good. Tie's get you your money back. The Marco Islander
If Donovan can stop fading when pressure is on Eagles will be fine boltfan

Just beat dallas!..I can take a loss by anyone else but those bag of misfits...And it wouldnt hurt to take a few other games in our division this year. njsurf2001
If I'm a bookmaker I'm seeing a big unknown - the performance of the new O-line. There are a lot of ways it could go wrong for that group which would put us in a deep hole. And if Maclin isn't ready to go early, we haven't got any better at WR. The write-up on the team is different however and this will bring money for the overs. I don't think schedule's an issue - the two West Coast trips are followed by a Monday night game in Washington and a Sunday night game. I reckon if it comes together in camp, better off backing some big-margin wins v Panthers, Saints and Bucs in the first month. GHem

Yeah boltfan, I'd hate the Pats (and their fans) if my team got knocked out of the playoffs by them all the time too. wokmaster
