According to a published report, the Eagles are bringing in a combination kicker/punter for a tryout on Wednesday.

The kid's name is Zach Thiry, and he is out of someplace called Carroll College, an NAIA powerhouse that has won five national championships. Thiry apparently wants to concentrate mostly on punts and kickoffs -- he was a national leader in punting at one point in his college career -- but the idea seems to be that he wants to try to do everything as a means of spelling both David Akers and Sav Rocca this summer, and then impress people any way he can. A tryout on Wednesday would be the first step.

The Eagles have already brought in free agent Sam Swank out of Wake Forest as a camp kicker.

As great as Sav Rocca was early in the year he struggled a great deal kicking in the cold weather. It would be interesting if this kid could prove consistent booming punts and become someone that can send kickoffs into the endzone.

Carroll College is in Montana so this kid can kick in the cold. could be one of those tricky secrets. you certainly dont need to be in D1 to kick in the NFL

I love Akers, but Sam Swank is going to be a kicker in the NFL for a long time.

Whenever the team signs a training camp body or someone for depth, there's always gotta be some Einstein with the sarcastic comment about what a "huge" move it was or how we'll definitely win a Superbowl now because of the move. I'm so glad we have these people to add their brilliant insights to minor team transactions or we'd never survive. Keep up the good work.

lol, I PROMISE TO BE NICER..could you try to be smarter? wake me when you locate a QB who completes every pass because apparently you expect McNabb to do it.

I hope he can place kick too. That would enable the Eagles to add ranother valuable roster spot. TE? RB? CB? DL? Safety?

The problem with a duo guy- if he gets hurt now you have to replace two people. I agree with that remark that you don't have be be D-! to be able to kick. My High School lost a state championship by one point because the coach passed 4 opportunities in the 4th quarter to kick a 25-yarder. The kid was making them from the 50 in warmups- it's all about confidence.
About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
