Eagles finish with a thud

POSTED: Sunday, January 9, 2011, 7:43 PM
Michael Vick and the Eagles couldn't overcome the Packers' defense despite a fourth-quarter rally. (Clem Murray/Staff Photographer)

The Eagles' season died, suddenly.

It is always the way at this time of year. Sudden. Empty.

The final score was Green Bay 21, Eagles 16. It played out in ways that a lot of people did not expect.

The Packers, the team without a running game, ran the ball early, often and effectively, and someone named James Stark ended up with well north of 100 yards.

The Eagles' defense couldn't come up with the big play when needed, especially on third down.

Michael Vick did not get hit as often as some people predicted by the Packers' blitzing defense, but he still could not make enough dynamic plays, either with his legs or with the big, downfield passes on which this team has so often relied. And he suffered some kind of a lower left leg injury on a failed 2-point conversion try with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter.

Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg had an extra week to game plan for the Packers, considering they didn't try to win the last game of the regular season, but they were able to work no schematic magic.

David Akers, the Pro Bowl kicker, missed twice, from 41 and 34 yards.

And even with all of that, the Eagles had a shot to win it at the end. The defense made a final stand, and the Packers were forced to punt the ball away at the 2-minute warning. Vick, with his foot taped up, returned to the huddle with 1:45 left and the ball on the Eagles' 34-yard line.

A 28-yard pass to DeSean Jackson got the ball to the Packers' 38-yard line. An incompletion to Brent Celek followed, and then an incomplete screen pass to Shady McCoy. Third-and-10. An 11-yard completion to Riley Cooper got the Eagles the first down, but then, on the next play it ended. Vick tried to force a ball to Cooper in the end zone, but Tramon William gained position undernearth. It was an easy interception with 33 seconds remaining.

So it ended. All that will be left are the recriminations.

the all-pro PK missed from 41 & 34. He hits those chip shots & Vick gets the W.

And what about the kicker?...A "Pro Bowl" kicker don't miss two easy field goals in big games. I'd say this was pretty good for a guy who was out of football for 2 years to come back and take a team with NO D and offensive line to the playoffs...

Too many mistakes and some missed opportunities in the 1st half (and missed FG's!). They did go down swinging though. Just ran out of time, and lost to the better team...The season was real fun while lasted...

I really, really hope Lurie wakes up and smells the stink that Reid and Mornhinweg continue to come up with on a weekly basis and he fires them both in a few weeks and starts over. The talent that this team has on offense is going to go to waste if a change is not made. As much as McDermont was handcuffed by a lack of talent on his side of the ball, he will be put in front of the firing squad. Package Kolb and Jackson together and get a top 5 and grab one of those shutdown corners (Prince from Neb. is my choice...go Huskers!) If Reid and Marty are back, expect the following: Great regular season numbers, a big loss to an inferior team and an early exit in the playoffs with the main culprit being "out-coached".

Reid and Vick are two of the biggest idiots in football. Until they are gone, expect more of the same: good against bad teams in the regular season, exposed in the playoffs as also-rans. And they will never be any better.

Stayed up till almost 2 in the morning to watch this pathetic excuse for a playoff performance. Just like in the NFC championship game two years ago against Arizona, everyone came up short: QB, secondary, red zone D, dropped passes, Akers' missed FGs...oh and above all, Andy Reid. Blame the role players all you want, but Andy is good enough to take this team to the playoffs, and that's IT! Fire Reid now!

    D. Jackson just stuck his mug into the interview Rogers was giving, patted him on the head with a nice smile on his face--have to get that national exposure shean? Same old same old results, BOZO just didn't teach his pupil how to be a winner. Andy R. said it was his fault, not putting the players in the right spot, he takes full blame--same old same old. 79.9 QBR for Vick-BOZO numbers. Maybe things will be different in 2012.

Once again, Reid got outcoached. He will NEVER win a Super Bowl, because he is not a big game coach. GB figured out that it really helps to run the ball, and once again, Reid refused to try. You could see from the first play, when Reid put Vick in a position to get killed and he almost did, that the Eagles had no chance. GB was better prepared and, with the exception of that one Rodgers fumble, also executed its plan better. What was the Eagles' plan, BTW? Get an already dinged-up Vick killed and allow as many third-down conversions as possible?

Lost 3 games in a row at home. 4-5 at home. Eagles are the dumbest team in the league, on the field and on the sidelines. NIce decision by Vick at the end - throw to a rookie. We shouldn't re-sign Vick. Just go the Lurie course and save money and make Kolb the guy. That way we can go 8-8, and not get teased again. Man it is hard being an Eagles' fan. Guess Jesus didn't want Akers to make those field goals.

I loved this game. A classic for you goof ballsthat actually think the Eagles are a quality team. Not many teams would get outscored by a team full of young inexperienced players like John Kuhn, James Starks, Tom Crabtree. This should not have happened with the great Assante "CheapShot Samuels, Mike Vick, DeShaun Jackson, and Jason "Drive Killer" Peters. The only answer you will hear is the same one that you have been hearing from the fat clown for over a decade. I did notprepare my team well enough to win. It's time to buy Mr. Reid some luggage and have him leave town. Mr. McDermot needs to explain why nobody can be stopped inside the Red Zone. PHILADELPHIA is one of 14 cities NEVER to win a Super Bowl. Andy Reid has preserved the streak.

You Eagle's fans are a trip. All you do is whin like little B's. Why do you think most pundits were picking the Packers. The Eagles have had a horrible defense all year, a terrible O line. Kevin Kolb would not have survived to the end of the season with that line, not even the great Tom Brady. This was suppose to be a rebuilding year, this team is still young and needs work on both side. The reason your team will never win a Superbowl is because of your irrational fans. Vick is the best thing that could have happened to this team this year and all you have done when he could no longer cover for all the weakness is blame him. You deserve a QB like a Derrick Anderson or Alex Smith!!!!

Of course I'm disappointed. Reid stuck it to Kolb because he wanted to win now, and banked on Vick to be the man to do it. Vick choked at the end, to end it with an INT. Between this game and the Vikings game, the old mediocre Vick is back. We need to go back to Kolb and start building for the future. We need to develop a young pocket passer for the next 7-10 years. Not some highlight film runner who is going to get himself killed out there and lose his legs in a year or two.

I thought MVP caliber QBs are supposed to take the team on it's shoulders and take over games...Where has Vick been in the last several weeks? He played really badly in the Giants game, then made some big plays late and got lucky that the Giants collapsed, or the Eagles would have lost that game. Then in a crucial game at home against an inferior team, Vick can't get it done and the Eagles miss out on the #2 seed and a bye. Now, this game Vick looked horrible for most of the game, until he made a late game comeback attempt. The game ended with a horrible decision and a horrible pass when there were open receivers. Of course Akers missed FGs hurt a lot, but Vick needed to show what he's made of in this game...maybe that's what he did.

Quarterback WAS not and IS not this team's problem... it's the fat guy on the sidelines and the defense that holds the Eagles back.

Another regular season championship for the con artist Reid. How many more times will the weak owner tolerate this. Another year, same story. Reid will NEVER win a superbowl, when will the dumb arse fans and ownership realize that Reid is just a good regular season coach. Vick will never win a superbowl either. The Vick supporters will blame Ackers or the defense...but 21 points given up by the defense should have produced a win. Vick like McNabb will be a regular season excitement machine that flops in the playoffs. Excitement QBs do not win superbowls they just entertain the druken naive casual fans. Another wasted season! Reid must go.

another close one, we're getting used to this. they have gotten farther than a lot of people thought they would. one thing that always strikes me me is the lack of fan support throughout the game. when you look at the ENTIRE first level, 80% of the fans were sitting during the packers drive deep into the red zone of the eagles during the first quarter. this is the playoffs!!! i go to games during the regular season and we get YELLED at by other eagles fans for standing in the lower section during what i deem important plays. i live in new england, and eagles' fans, please pay attention for the rest of the playoffs, but the pats' fans stand for pretty much the entire game. the pats were 8-0 this year at home, the birds were 4-5. the eagles defense shouldn't have to signal for the fans to cheer in the 4th quarter, why don't we do it automatically??? really, i want the birds to win as much as you do, but we need to help them more than this.

Since the Eagles don't measure success in terms of winning Super Bowls, it will be business as usual again next season. Sure, a few players will come and go, but Andy Reid and his gang will soldier on.

Where to start? How about not re signing Vick. He will never win the big game. Second send McDermott and about seven defensive starters packing. Third, draft a kicker (see Vick in big games). Finally, get some real offensive lineman. It would also be too much to ask for a new head coach but......

Well we started the season not expecting to go into the Playoffs anyway, besides next week would have been the Bears abd we know how that usually turns out. If only all the coaches in the NFL could be Tom Couglin, reid would look like a genius.
Same old, same old Eagles story, get behind late, let a rookie make you look bad, play under your ability, lose a game you easily could have won to a team that could not put you away. Are we going into next season with two QBs, one who is too short and too easily injured and the other who can't score points?

Yeah, I don't want to be all racial but four out of the last eight superbowl head coaches were black and two have one it. There were two other black QBs to appear in the Super Bowl, Steve McNair and Donovan McNabb. Both were shown the door yet Jeff Fisher and Andy Reid have held onto their jobs for a long time without accomplishing a whole heck of a lot. I guess Jeff and Andy are black too, right?

Precisely why sadly this town won't ever win a superbowl... Because at the heart of it's fan base are racist Fishtown and Port Richmond trash who would rather sit on their stoop, collect disability and snort OC's, then venture out into the real world, grow up and stop making everything you're depressed about into a reason to express your racism. Pathetic.

A few penalties , two horrid FG misses and the D could not stop a guy name Starks the new Iron Man. Vick wasn't superb but was more than adequate and almost ....and that is another season of Eagles not ...51 yrs. now since a championship. Yipe. I still like them; have since 1947.

If Lurie really wants a team that has a real shot at winning a super bowl, he needs to fire Reid and bring in a coach that will let Kevin Kolb develop his already impressive skills. We have a fast, young team...We need to build our offensive line and let our defense either grow up, or be replaced. The dog murderer needs to go

when Fat andy decides to get a power runner and a possession receiver the red zone is all ways going to have the same results. the red zone offense has sucked for the last 6 years going back to the last time they played the bears and the super bowl for that matter, when r they going to learn you cant send a all out blitz and not jam the receivers on a timing route will get you burned every time ? Samuel is not going to tackle! the blitz up the middle is not working (all season), when are they going to add some quick snap plays instead of waiting for the defense to line up to see the same old plays he has been getting players killed with.they have no quick plays its always looking down field for the big play.

I wouldn't call this season a disappointment, just a disappointing ending. To win the NFC East in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year is a positive.

It's so glaringly obvious what we need in the draft and via free agency that even Fat Andy may not be able to mess this up, but you never know....his draft record is NOT very good (Patterson and Bunkley say HELLO).

Before everyone kills the kicker, he may have missed two field goals, but a Packer receiver dropped a TD pass at the end of the 1st half. The Packer's then came out and fumbled the ball to start the 2nd half. There were plays not made by both sides, just don't start thinking that if Akers had made those two kicks that the Eagles would have won. If that Packer receiver catches that TD pass at the end of the 1st half the score at halftime would have been 21-3 and the game would have been over. Woulda, coulda, shoulda, the Eagles just got beat by a better team. Also if Akers had made those two field goals I am sure the Packer's wouldn't have run the ball there last 10 plays. I know it hurts, but don't get too carried away in blaming Akers. There is a lot of blame to go around and a lot of plays, by both teams that would have changed the game.

Fans will scream about Reid, Vick, the D, etc. If you look at the game and the stats - it was a dead even game. Difference was 2 missed FGs. Hate to say it, but you got to hang this on Akers. Defense did a good enough job, offense did a good enough job, Akers didn't do his job. better luck next year.

@Depressed...We didn't win one with Jaws, Garcia, McMahon, Pederson or any other starting QB so please don't place the race card. Let me guess, Kolb would have done so much better. He would put the team on his back because he is a "Real Leader". How about placing blame on the whole team...Everybody had their hand in it. Much as I like McDermott, he must be replaced. His D creates turnovers but give up way too many points. Bring Childress back, the team never had Red Zones issues when he was the OC.

Enough of Akers in the big games. He's old, he can't kick off worth a damn, and he's only automatic from 30 yards in. Besides a new kicker, we need a new D-line (Someone put out an APB on Trent Cole), a new O-line (Justice, are you kidding me?), a new strongside LB (I saw the back of Ernie Sims' jersey all day, as he chased after plays that had pass him by), a new safety (Mikell makes ZERO plays and couldn't even cover up a fumble in his gut), and a new corner (enough of the overachieving, undrafted free agents. Give us someone with a pedigree). It's going to take two years to put this all together, so a work stoppage isn't the worst thing in the world. Go Phillies.

I'm with Tar Heel: This was never supposed to be a Super Bowl year for us, with McNabb leaving and a new QB starting. The last 3-4 weeks, coaches obviously figured out how to defense Vick. BUT, if Celek stays in bounds, and Cooper makes a better defensive play with everything on the line, who knows? To me, you franchise Vick and come back next year with him and Kolb, a healthy and re-signed DeSean, and let the team grow a year more mature. We had a good year when we weren't really supposed to. Do any of us want to trade Reid and Vick for Shanahan and Grossman or Coughlin and Eli? Heck no.

The only reason they even get to play this time of year during Reid's whole tenure is because they are in the division of weak coaches and QBs. That's why the get bounced out early. Fans need to start expecting and demanding the Eagles try to be on the level of the Ravens, Steelers, Pats and not worry about their pathetic NFC East neighbors.

I can't believe how unprepared the offense looked early. The D is what it is. To Akers defense, they should have gone for it on the 1st one cause the wind. The constant undisciplined play is coaching. How many defensive offsides on 3rd down can we watch! Winston Justice should have had to eat the penalty flag. Reid will never change and we will never win with a running QB. Even if Vick is signed, he won't make it through 5 games next year.

This teams obvious problem is with coaching and preparation. Yes there are many personnel issues, but watching the defense in the first half, many appeared to be unsure of what formation they were in and shifting around too much. I'm not talking about when they were trying to disguise anything, but I saw Dbacks hustling to get into position, and saw Chaney shove Simms into position once. On the offense they are too predictable. They have the potential to run, but Andy never does. There has to be a time when the ownership of this team grows tired of hearing "I, or we, have to do a better job of putting these guys into a better position." That has been repeated year after year for 11 years. I believe the reason why Andy was so animated this year, more than usual, and the reason that he pulled the plug on Kolb so fast is because he knows he is on the hotseat. McDermott must go now. He has dismantled this defense and confused the hell out of it. I also agree, bring back Childress, or make him Head Coach.

I over-sestimated the defense all season. I thought they were mediocre, but in reality they were pathetic. This loss isn't on Vick or Akers. Despite the 4th quarter mini-suspense, despite the usual stupid penalties resulting from lack of discipline, this game was lost early on, when the D looked totally lost. On some camera shots, I couldn't believe how many Eagles were in no man's land, completely out of position, with no one around them, looking like they had their eyes closed. The game was close because the Packers are merely good, not dominant. With an average defense and a bit more discipline, the Wingheads could be a scary team.Time to dump Kermit McDermott. Can't wait for MLB Spring Training.

My IQ, if you must know, is 146. And the Eagles did win a title in 1960, which was 50 years ago. 146 is greater than 50, so you are incorrect.
I'm just tired of you Eagle fans talking trash whenever your team beats the Giants. Then when your season ends with disappointment, as it ALWAYS does, you resort to name-calling and sore loser response. Hate to say it but this lost didn't hurt as much as the previous ones in the past.. Why???? Because it was expected!! I expected us not to run the ball when our defense needed it the most. I expected our so called main receiver to get shut down. Please trade desean. Eagles football is about being physical that is just not in his make up. Honestly although chaney looked lost on a few plays he plays physical. The best I seen in years. Lets find him some help in the off season. Vick made mistakes but some of it could have been avoided with a balanced attack. Most of the great qbs in history had prolific 'physical' go 2 receivers please lets find him just one... Just one!!!!!!!! I like mcDoorMats heart but when ever a team got us to the red zone this season most of the time they scored. For that he must go!!!!! All that being said as long as andy reid is still the head coach I expect more of the same. But maybe if we get brad childress he might knock some sense into him. Honestly I like reid but his inability to change drains me.. Maybe andy is at an age where the word change frightens him..lol

Get rid of McDermott. Obviously the time he had with JJ did not rub off on him. When your defense constantly gives up 30 points every week even to teams that don't have good offenses that's when you know the D coordinator is not doing a good job. They need to get a real defensive coordinator to go along with the potent offese they already have (even if it didn't show up in this game).

There are over 500 comments posted here about why they lost and who is to blame. This comment from a Philadelphia reporter can put to sleep the whole discussion on the loss and the end of the season. No need to post anymore comments.

"Instead of continuing his magical journey to the Super Bowl, Vick was left sitting at a table in the basement of the Linc trying to explain why on 1st-and-10 from the Packers’ 27-yard-line, with three more plays to work with, he tried to sneak a pass to a rookie receiver with nine career receptions who was covered by a cornerback who finished second in the NFC in interceptions?"

I love it. The Vick Haters are out again. Ignore the dumb penalties, red zone defense and O-line struggles, two missed field goals, poor coaching, etc. and blame it all on #7. Eagles would not have sniffed the playoffs without Vick.

The Packers do not even have a second drive for a touchdown if #27 would have waited until the play was over to start barking and wailing his arms about something that happened to him he did not like. On 3-1 the Packers Koonce fumbled the ball, and their it was, tucked right in #27's belly on the ground with no one else yet even close to fight for the ball. Yet #27 is so consumed with something that he quit on the play even though it is not yet over, all he had to do was drop his left arm down on the ball, play over, fumble recovery, turnover to the eagles. Yet I don't think he even knew were the ball was because he was so consumed over something, a push in the back, a hold, something so that he flailing the arm in disgust, even though no ref can see it. But there it is, the ball, stuck in his belly waiting for his flailing arm to cover it up. This is the play that cost the Eagles more than any other. Yet no one is even talking about it. All these intelligent analysts, and sportscasters, and sportswriters missing it, just as #27 missed that their even was a fumble.

I am beginning to wonder the intelligence level of the average athlete. How can things like this happen over and over. Play till the whistle, then and only then do you make your opinion of something known!

2nd biggest reason for the loss: runs on second and 3, and 3rd and 1, when you got Vick on the team. No Fg to miss if you let Vick make the pass or run.

3rd reason: the missed FG's, hit one of the two misses, and a fg wins at the end. I think the hold on the last miss looked like the ball was laying sideways.

4th reason: with 40 plus seconds left on First down keep picking up the 10-15 yard plays.

I put this on the coach first, #27 second, Akhers 3rd, and Vick 4th.

If that pass had been complete, as I feared it would be, you'd be all mouth right now. I'd expect no less from fans and a city whose sole claim to fame is being "tough, dirty and nasty."

WAKE UP PHILLY! OK so we don't have McNabb to blame anymore. It was always his fault when they didn't win. Guess what, that excuse is gone! It's VERY SIMPLE! It is Andy Reid's fault. How many times do we have to watch game after game without adjustments, without proper time management and with that same old game plan? REID MUST GO!!! NOW!!!

If you are a classy QB that was top 5 of the decade and the main reason your team was not sub.400 for 10 years you get run out of town.

If you are a punk b with diamond earings and lead a classless 'thug' life you get a big contract even if you only go for picks and take 2 of every 3 plays off, or can only go out for 1/3 of the field and fall down the second someone is near you.

If you come in play out of your mind and are respectful and are the only reason the team wasn't 3-13 they call for your head.

    Pretty stinky philly p.u.

    You eagles fans amaze me. you judge the season by a playoff loss. true fans realize that anything less than a super bowl victory is a failed season. that is why only the DALLAS COWBOYS fans are true fans. just getting there is not enough. the only thing that matters is a super bowl victory. Oh yea, you would not know about that would you.;

About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
