Two decades ago -- 20 years ago, just about to the week -- the Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys on the final day of the 1988 season. They needed this incredible bank shot to win the NFC East and make the playoffs for the first time since 1981 -- a win at Dallas and a loss by the Giants against the Jets at the Meadowlands.

It happened.

This, though, was bigger.

We all know it now: the Bucs lost and the Bears lost and then the Eagles went out and dismantled the Cowboys, 44-6. With that, the Eagles earned the final NFC wildcard with a 9-6-1 record and a first-round playoff game at Minnesota.

Yes, this was bigger.

That day was a triumph of still-young satellite television technology, and some ingenuity. Texas Stadium had a satellite TV system so we knew in the press box that the Giants were falling apart at the end -- it was the only NFL stadium where that was possible. But then, through a telephone messenger system from the press box to the field, the Eagles' bench was kept apprised as the whole  fortunate business unfolded.

This was so different, yet similar. Fans in the stadium crowded around concourse televisions to cheer on the Raiders over the Bucs. And then, handed their destiny for the second time in two weeks thanks to the collapsing Bucs, the Eagles held on to it this time, absolutely pulverizing the Cowboys in a game where the winner would go to the playoffs and the loser would go home. Their domination was total.

It was the game a disgruntled Eagles fan base has been waiting for all season, delivered at the last possible moment. It was a day that fans of this team will talk about for years. The Eagles were about a 10-1 shot at the start of the day, a 10-1 shot to make it, no better -- and it happened.

Where are all the haters now? I saw Eskin (the ultimate hater) smiling and shaking hands with Laurie on the sidelines. Make up your minds Negadelphia, do you love the Birds or do you just love hating the Birds? Wait till McNabb and Reid actually leave town and you have to suffer through seasons like a lot of other NFL cities do year in and year out. Playoffs Baby!

It is sweet because of Dallas being the "anointed ones" at the beginning of the season. It is sweet because the Eagles endured some tough losses but hung in. It is sweet because of the naysayers, yes, right here in Philadelphia, who trashed McNabb and Reid unmercifully throughout. And it s extra sweet for Dawkins for reasons that should be obvious. So let's enjoy it and let's see what they can do. They're largely healthy and the defense is playing exceptionally well.

WOW! The game turned around when Reid started to commit to the run. That got the WRs loose, got them first downs, and inspired the defense. Great win. I am a proud fan tonight!

The key was all the T.O.'s Dallas brought to the game. Four were fumbles, one was an interception, and one was screaming at his coach and QB.

The Eagles are the hottest team going into the playoffs. I read nothing all week in these posts trashing Reid and McNabb, Well, you were 100% wrong. We will stomp the Vikings. We will crush the Giants. Bring on the Titans. This is it! This is our year and you all gave up on them. The people who stuck by the team get to enjoy the rest of the trip and it's been a wild trip so far. Go Donovan. Go Reid. Go Dawk. And go Eagles!!!!!

You won't hear anything negative from me today, Reid actually called a balanced game. The defense was a complete beast. Clemons really showed me something today. I hate the cowboys more then any other team that has ever existed so to dismantle them the way we did today is soooooooooo sweet. The only negative was Aikman, he is incapable of calling the game from anything but from the Cowboys fans view point. Not until the late fourth quarter did he actually compliment our team rather then state how many mistakes the Cowboys were making. GREAT WIN!

Not a "hater" - a realist. This team has never really done what it takes to put them over the top. That is Reid's fault as the GM. Add to that his amount of losses that can be attributed to his horrendous play calling or clock management or lack of top-flite personnel...this is the wounded deer that just delays the inevitable - death. Dallas has proven a few times this season that they were not the "gods of football" as predicted at the start of the season. Today is a great Eagles win (especially after the close loss to Dallas earlier - a real "stick it to 'em"), but this is not going propel them to the championship. It's the equivalent of asking a Chevy Malibu to win an Formula One race.

jonnyb is right on the money ("Negadelphia", I'm gonna remember that one). Even during the win, there were folks on the live game chat saying Reid, McNabb or both should still go after this season. When will people actually understand that what J-Roll said is what Charles Barkley said and Schmidtty said... geez. Can't wait to see what the Philly sportswriters come up with for tomorrow.

All of the NFC playoff teams that the Eagles played during the regular season (NY Giants, Falcons, Cardinals, and Cowboys), the Eagles beat them. I like the Eagles chances for a nice run in the playoffs. I saw Lurie on the sidelines say to McNabb, as the game wound down, "Four more wins!"

AARRRRGGGHHH!!! I didn't watch, as I had written them off and had a lot of other things to do today. Oh, me of little faith. But, take heart, Eagles fans, because if I had watched, they would have lost. (Maybe I should turn a blind eye to the playoffs, too.) Now, as a consolation, can someone tell me where I can get a recording of the game, preferably with Merrill Reese's play-by-play?

Hey jp5427- Guess what you are a hater!!!!! You Looser!!! Enjoy the win man!! There are only 6 NFC teams going to the playoffs, there will be only 1 Superbowl champion this yr., who's gonna start at QB Kolb?? Who's going to coach the team- M. Morniwehg or better yet, you!! They are close, and if they don't get far in the playoffs this yr., a tweak here or there may get them there next yr. or the next, a change in QB and/or change a coach would only guarantee multiple losing seasons!!! Like you a looser!!!!!!!!

Think about these 2 things last week: IF we beat Washington then today would have been backwards... Dallas would have had the pregame shot of adrenaline instead of Philly IF Denver would have beaten Buffalo as they should have, Eagles / Cowboys would have remained the flex game tonight and then there would have been 3 - 4 hours for Dallas to regroup a bit and Philly to calm down before kickoff instead of how it played out today. Dallas gets blindsided with a ton of momentum Philly's way. Lot of things you don't think about that (may) have affected the game.

When we click and fire on all cylinders, we can play and defeat the best (Pittsburg, Dallas, Giants, Atlanta, etc.). The improbable happened - two weeks in a row the football powers that be, put our fate in our own hands. Seeing as how so many people today had no idea what it would take for the Birds to get it (even though it is all over the net), maybe they didn't realize how easy they could have made it on themselves if they won last week. Go Eagles! There is something about Tampa and Philly this year...

It's a great win, and an exciting day, but for heaven's sake this doesn't erase horrible games by the QB and the coach against the Bears, Skins (X2) and Bengals. You folks who have drunk the koolaid -- did you not notice pass after pass after pass after pass after pass thrown into the ground 3 feet in front of the receiver last week? Of course all Eagles fans are enjoying this and will continue to enjoy it, but remember that incompetent coaching and poor QB play put the team in the position of needing the Raiders and Texans to win.

I am stunned. Who can figure this team out? After losing to the Redskins without scoring a touchdown last week, I said to myself, "Stick a fork in the Birds, they're done." Today, I my wife and I took a drive to visit some friends with the thought, who cares about the Eagles and Cowboys. I thought even if they found a way to beat Dallas, they're not going to make the playoffs. No way are the Raiders going to beat the Bucs in Tampa. And, what about the Bears and Houston. The odds were a long shot at the very best. I hear it was something like 10 to 1. So off I go with my wife and we enjoy a wonderful Sunday afternoon with friends. I come home and discover that the Eagles have wailed the tar out of the Cowboys 44-6. UNBELIEVEABLE!!! And, both the Bucs and the Bears have gone down to defeat. UNBELIEVEABLE!!! How can we lose to the Redskins (they lost to the 49ers today) and then against all odds not only win the game but clobber the Cowboys. I should take more Sunday afternoon drives with my wife. We are in the playoffs!! Impossible. Not at all. Bring on the Vikings

Come on now, the critism of Reid was fair. None of you here can deny AR's playcalling and game management through most of this season was poor to say the least. The Eagles win today does not change what happened earlier in the season and had Reid stuck to a more balanced approach on offensive, the Eagles would have had at least 11 wins and today would have not mattered.

Geez..........It's not TOO SUSPICIOUS that a 4-11 Oakland team just MIRACULOUSLY beats a 9-6 Tampa Bay, that the sub-.500 Houston Texans JUST HAPPEN to beat 9-6 Chicago, that the NFL JUST HAPPENS to pick the Philadelphia-Dallas game to move to 4:15, which, because of everything that COINCIDENTALLY fell into place earlier in the day, gave the NFL and FOX a ratings bonanza for the Eagle-Cowboy game. Quite INTERESTING, isn't it??? (LOL)

I'd have to say in terms of the circumstances that they faced coming in, this would have to be the most satisfying win in Philly's sports history. The one game I'd compare this to was '82 when the Sixers defied the experts and fans by smoking the Celtics in Game 7- the Andrew Toney game. Brought back memories of that.

This team is baffling the heck out of me. I can't figure out if they are a bunch of over achieving bad team or under achieving good team. The good thing is that they are getting it rolling at the right time and especially with defense which will be tough in the playoffs. Bottom line is anything can happen in the playoffs. Post-game poetry Philly is safe ….the Bucs can be referred to as the new Choke-Land After losing its 4th straight game in December to a crew from Oakland Then the Bears who clawed to victory Monday night over the Packers Lost to a non-entity in Houston, name of Texans who’d played like slackers With the door wide open to an improbable playoff sortie The Birds laid into the Cowboys, scoring more than forty Jim Johnson’s D disrupted offensive guru Jason Garrett’s offensive scheme And turned the supposedly vaunted Dallas offensive into melted ice cream What a difference a week makes – the post-season seemed remote about 168 hours ago But now the Cowboys can play golf while the Birdies will be part of the post-season show Andy Reid’s squad has all of Phillyland -- and remotely-located fans – happy and proud ‘Cause we’ll continue to back the Gang Green with our spirit, enthusiasm and voices so loud

The Eagles are in, that's all that counts. Being seeded 6th doesn't matter. Play every playoff game like today, and it's ON TO THE SUPERBOWL. I've said before the season started, Dallas had the best talent in the NFC, found out today, that all the talent in the world doesn't mean diddly. The Eagles played the almost perfect game today. If they play with that desire and attitude for the next 3 games, it will be the SUPERBOWL.

How ironic that it is the tie against Cincinnati that helped the Eagles make the playoffs. Think about it. If Reid had gone for it on 4th and 1 deep in Eagles territory late in OT against the Bengals, the Bengals may have won the game with a much shorter FG opportunity. Had that happened, the Eagles would have finished 9-7 and been edged out by the Bears also at 9-7 for the last wild card spot.
