Two decades ago -- 20 years ago, just about to the week -- the Eagles played the Dallas Cowboys on the final day of the 1988 season. They needed this incredible bank shot to win the NFC East and make the playoffs for the first time since 1981 -- a win at Dallas and a loss by the Giants against the Jets at the Meadowlands.

It happened.

This, though, was bigger.

We all know it now: the Bucs lost and the Bears lost and then the Eagles went out and dismantled the Cowboys, 44-6. With that, the Eagles earned the final NFC wildcard with a 9-6-1 record and a first-round playoff game at Minnesota.

Yes, this was bigger.

That day was a triumph of still-young satellite television technology, and some ingenuity. Texas Stadium had a satellite TV system so we knew in the press box that the Giants were falling apart at the end -- it was the only NFL stadium where that was possible. But then, through a telephone messenger system from the press box to the field, the Eagles' bench was kept apprised as the whole  fortunate business unfolded.

This was so different, yet similar. Fans in the stadium crowded around concourse televisions to cheer on the Raiders over the Bucs. And then, handed their destiny for the second time in two weeks thanks to the collapsing Bucs, the Eagles held on to it this time, absolutely pulverizing the Cowboys in a game where the winner would go to the playoffs and the loser would go home. Their domination was total.

It was the game a disgruntled Eagles fan base has been waiting for all season, delivered at the last possible moment. It was a day that fans of this team will talk about for years. The Eagles were about a 10-1 shot at the start of the day, a 10-1 shot to make it, no better -- and it happened.

Yeah, but the Eagles still are not hat good. I'd love to be proven wrong, however.

Where are all the haters now? I saw Eskin (the ultimate hater) smiling and shaking hands with Laurie on the sidelines. Make up your minds Negadelphia, do you love the Birds or do you just love hating the Birds? Wait till McNabb and Reid actually leave town and you have to suffer through seasons like a lot of other NFL cities do year in and year out. Playoffs Baby!

It is sweet because of Dallas being the "anointed ones" at the beginning of the season. It is sweet because the Eagles endured some tough losses but hung in. It is sweet because of the naysayers, yes, right here in Philadelphia, who trashed McNabb and Reid unmercifully throughout. And it s extra sweet for Dawkins for reasons that should be obvious. So let's enjoy it and let's see what they can do. They're largely healthy and the defense is playing exceptionally well.

WOW! The game turned around when Reid started to commit to the run. That got the WRs loose, got them first downs, and inspired the defense. Great win. I am a proud fan tonight!

The key was all the T.O.'s Dallas brought to the game. Four were fumbles, one was an interception, and one was screaming at his coach and QB.

The Eagles are the hottest team going into the playoffs. I read nothing all week in these posts trashing Reid and McNabb, Well, you were 100% wrong. We will stomp the Vikings. We will crush the Giants. Bring on the Titans. This is it! This is our year and you all gave up on them. The people who stuck by the team get to enjoy the rest of the trip and it's been a wild trip so far. Go Donovan. Go Reid. Go Dawk. And go Eagles!!!!!

You won't hear anything negative from me today, Reid actually called a balanced game. The defense was a complete beast. Clemons really showed me something today. I hate the cowboys more then any other team that has ever existed so to dismantle them the way we did today is soooooooooo sweet. The only negative was Aikman, he is incapable of calling the game from anything but from the Cowboys fans view point. Not until the late fourth quarter did he actually compliment our team rather then state how many mistakes the Cowboys were making. GREAT WIN!

Not a "hater" - a realist. This team has never really done what it takes to put them over the top. That is Reid's fault as the GM. Add to that his amount of losses that can be attributed to his horrendous play calling or clock management or lack of top-flite personnel...this is the wounded deer that just delays the inevitable - death. Dallas has proven a few times this season that they were not the "gods of football" as predicted at the start of the season. Today is a great Eagles win (especially after the close loss to Dallas earlier - a real "stick it to 'em"), but this is not going propel them to the championship. It's the equivalent of asking a Chevy Malibu to win an Formula One race.

jonnyb is right on the money ("Negadelphia", I'm gonna remember that one). Even during the win, there were folks on the live game chat saying Reid, McNabb or both should still go after this season. When will people actually understand that what J-Roll said is what Charles Barkley said and Schmidtty said... geez. Can't wait to see what the Philly sportswriters come up with for tomorrow.

My poor long suffering husband is a Cleveland fan who wishes his team had Philly's problems with Reid as coach and McNabb as quaterback! Go Eagles! What a fun game to watch!

My ballot has been cast. Donovan should stay, Reid should go.
About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
