Did an Eagles chat this afternoon.

One hour.

Thirty-eight questions.

Only two about Donovan McNabb.

Now, a producer selects the questions from a longer list. There might have been a higher percentage of McNabb questions in the whole list -- there probably were; I only gave it a quick scan during the chat -- but it wasn't a lot more. And I'm sitting here trying to figure out if there is a lesson in there somewhere.

Because, on the one hand, as I've said many times, all you have to do is belch McNabb's name in a column to get people to read it. One of the most-read stories the other day on philly.com was a recapitulation of McNabb's post on yardbarker.com. On the other hand, though, there seems to be a lot of interest now in the Eagles' new draft class and the reconfiguring of the offense and the rest.

I'm not sure what to make of it.

Yes, there is an important lesson here. The lesson is that Eagles fans are more interested the performance of the team and wins/losses than they are about over-analyzing every single word McNabb says and coming up with endless speculation about what McNabb "might" be thinking. We can only read what you guys talk about so if the media keeps focusing most of its attention on McNabb, then that's what we're stuck reading if we want to try to get Eagles' news. But the lesson is that the fans aren't all that interested in the McNabb controversies that the media tries to create.

Yes, Rich, there is a lesson here. The lesson is that any informed, halfway intelligent fan that has a shred of objectivity would admit that Donovan McNabb is the greatest QB in Eagles history. McNabb is now #1 or close to it in every statistical category for QB's in the history of the team, including wins; both regular season and playoff. Sure, like everyone I'll get discouraged when the Eagles lose a NFC Championship or Super Bowl, but first you have to be IN a Championship or Super Bowl. The last 11 years have been by far the greatest era in the teams history, nowhere else will you find 5 trips to the NFC Championship and a Super Bowl appearance. I was born after the 1960 season (their last title), but I know that football was not a 12 month a year type of job in those days, and that Coach Shaw lived in California in the offseason. I'm as frustrated as anyone when '5' has a tough game, but he probably doesn't react to those games the way everyone would like because he's tired of getting killed by the media and their endless speculation as to when he'll be replaced. I don't know when that day will be, but I guarantee it won't be a great day for Eagles fans. There are people in this town that will tell you that a player will be loved in this town provided he gives it his all on the field and conducts himself with class off of it. Somehow, we've chosen to make McNabb the exception to the rule. This year, for the first time, McNabb has more than one weapon at his disposal, so let's see how far he can take the 2009 Eagles. If he finally wins a Super Bowl, he should be around for another few years, after which his next stop is most likely Canton.

The lesson is that Mr. McNabb is simply uninteresting, self absorbed, and perpetually wild, low and away or high and tight with his fastball..

the lesson is that any rich hoffman article needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Rich, you have no clue about what a philadelphia fan thinks or feels. that's sad.

The lesson is no caps lock and no long winded responses.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
