Eagles fall to Steelers, 16-14

POSTED: Sunday, October 7, 2012, 4:14 PM

PITTSBURGH -- A cold rain fell intermittently on Heinz Field. It was the second half of Eagles vs. Steelers, and the Eagles were trying to overcome another first half of mistakes.

It was a game where Michael Vick could not hold on to the ball, again. And where they couldn’t sack the quarterback, and where they trailed at the half, again. The deficit this time was 10-0, but that was just a detail. It is as if the first act of the script is written in ink now. There is nothing the Eagles can seem to do about it.

And this time, they could not overcome.

Vick led the Eagles on two second-half touchdown drives and the Eagles took a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter. But in the end, the defense could not hold. A Shaun Suisham field goal from 34 yards with only zeroes left on the clock gave the Steelers the victory, 16-14.

Two Vick fumbles in the first half -- one of them just a yard away from scoring a touchdown -- doomed the Eagles to another afternoon of climbing out of a crater. Neither resulted in points for the Steelers, but one robbed the Eagles of points and the other just perpetuated a worrisome syndrome. It is a ridiculous way to try to make a living in the NFL, and the fact that they have been so good at it so far this season does not alter that truth.

It is too hard.

It cannot continue.

All of that said, the Eagles do make things thrilling. Down at the half, they kept coming. They scored their first touchdown with 6:32 left in the third quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass to LeSean McCoy, a short throw that featured a devastating cutback move by McCoy that paralyzed Steelers linebacker Larry Foote.

Then, after a Steelers field goal, the Eagles put together a 17-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that ate up 8 minutes, 18 seconds. Along the way, they converted two fourth-down plays -- a gutsy fourth-and-1 from their own 31-yard line, when McCoy only gained the necessary acreage with a second effort, and another fourth-and-1 from the Steelers’ 47, when McCoy just slammed into the line for 2 yards.

The touchdown play was a 2-yard pass to tight end Brent Celek. Buried at halftime, the Eagles led by 14-13 with 6:33 left in the fourth quarter. Once again, their defense would either hold or not -- last week against the Giants’ Eli Manning, this week against the Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger.

This time, it could not hold. They could not sack Big Ben, and the Steelers’ quarterback hung in and made just enough plays to pull out the game. But he is a good player, and he is going to make some plays. This is not a defensive issue.

This is about fumbles. It is about another slow start. When will it end? If you know the answer to that question, you know how the Eagles’ season is going to turn out.

tough loss but all the vick sucks and start nick foles stuff is a little much..Its simple, vick lead the team on a 8 minute drive to take the lead, the defense let the steelers drive 6 minutes for a game winning feild goal. the d has to hold there, no excuses. this defense again had zero sacks zero turnovers thats not good enough. And nnamdi is officially the weak link out there on defense, lets cut the saftey help excuses, he cant stay with anybody

Anyone else agree that if this team had more players with the heart of Shady McCoy on it, they'd be champs?

Tell me about it Vick had a passer rating of 104.20 look it up. So he made up for them fumbles he lost but how about that oline getting exposed and holding on the ball too long what game were you guys watching. Vick is 6 feet and his line isn't blocking for him. He didn't have no time to hold on to the ball. They were right in his face and there were no hot routes. It seems that none of you guys understand football so kick rocks, find another team to root for because this fan base on here is bias.

The announcer said that their great runner was going to run the next play. They did. Where was the defense? Where was Juan? Unreal how horrific they are.

Hey - Maybe Vick will figure it out NEXT week....That's the mantra these Vickiots use when defending the single most overrated player in the NFL in the past decade. Maybe chowderhead will learn how to play the game NEXT week. Best part - after game interview with this blockhead - Q: Do you think your style of play - holding onto the ball too long, etc - is affecting the turnover numbers. A: - No I don't think so. Which is why this friggin idiot has been, is, and will always be a LOSER.

This was a tough, competitive game. Did Vick's turnovers hurt? Yes, but they weren't the deciding factor. Give credit to Pittsburgh for doing just enough to win. This Eagles team is going to be VERY good by the end of the season. The biggest problem I see is that Asomugha is being exposed and abused. It seems that teams target him when they need a game changing play. I think it's time to move him to safety and put Boykin on the outside with DRC.

Let's take a look...Vick holds onto the ball too long, offenseive line has problems holding their blocks long enough when he is the QB, doesn't know (????) how to slide, fumbles the ball too much, gets hurt too often and has admitted to not being able to throw a screen pass, especially with one of the best pass catching backs in the NFL. on the flip side...he is a leader, has a cannon for an arm, comes through in the clutch...I don't know so of his flaws seem to outnumber his good qualities.

The game was won, all the Eagles Defense had to do was hold Pittsburgh to one first down and they could not do the job. Missed tackles and blown assignments lost this game.

When the game hangs in the balance, NFL coaches are going at rookies to exploit.

Would Foles turn the ball over MORE than Vick???? I doubt it. If the Eagles are last in scoring, could we do worse with Foles? At this point, Vick's tendencies don't look fixable. It's certainly not all his fault, but the fumbles ARE. If he hasn't learned to put 2 hands on the ball and tuck it when he's about to be hit by now, he's never going to. Detroit is coming in, again, off of a bye and rested for the Eagles. If Vick keeps putting it on the turf, I say take the bye week to get Nick ready and give Foles a chance. Even if it's just to send Vick a message. The way they are currently playing, this season will go nowhere in the end. 3-2 is a mirage.

I think that those 2 are playing not as wide to protect against the run. The result has been less sacks. Still no excuse for their abscence in the backfield. Meanwhile Irvin of Seattle, the player we fip floped Cox for, had another great game today.

Love when fellow eagles fans say calm down after watching Vick continue to put our defense in short field situations. We somehow help Big Ben with no throwing TDs. Vick cost us this game but the question is why. IMO shady should have 25-30 touches running the ball, Bryce brown and Havali 5-10. The full back in the redzone should have ran the ball. Instead Reid calls a pass or quarterback sneak. Ignoring how many times Vick turned the ball over this season

Each week that Michael Vick falls on his face makes me more sure God is a pit bull. Signing the sociopath was a disgrace to Philadelphia and proof that winning was all that matters to the owner. However it turns out Karma is indeed a b***h.

We lost to a Super Bowl caliber team on the home field in weather conditions that do not suit our team. Not a bad loss when you look at the desperation the Steeleres came out with after a 1 and 2 atart. Obviously Vick has to protect the ball but i really cannnot complain about being in first place in the NFC east.

We played tough despite poor coaching and more costly turnovers. The drive late in the 3rd really pissed me off. We threw it 3 straight times and punted when we needed to sustain something. Steelers get the ball and ran it like 5 straight times to start the drive. Hate to say it but Boykin is getting picked on in big spots and he's getting beat almost every time. Didn't mind the zone call on 3rd n long(last drive) but Boykins positioning was horrible and made it a very easy throw for the 1st down. I still wish we would blitz more and disguise our fronts. Seems like it's too predictable and to easy for their o-line to account for who's covering who. Bottom line is if Vick doesn't turn it over we probably win. It's the same old story with him almost every week, you'd think Andy would get sick and tired of it like most of us watching are, but i guess not. Kinda almost wish he would get banged up and miss a week or two so we can see what this team would look like with Foles.

The offense clicked in the second half and the defense was only ONE play from pulling it out. I wish I knew how to keep the ball in MV's hands. It'll eventually cost him his job if he doesn't get a grip.

They have the potential to be a lot better. Let's be honest, we have not been seeing a lot of good Eagles football yet. You know - lots of yards and exciting plays. The defense is solid but very unimaginative. It could use more variety. Yes, the DL is good and gets pressure on the QB. But not good enough to get sacks and limit throwing time. Big Ben had enough time to get the job done. My opinion is that they have a lot of talent and a lot to prove. They still have along way to go before achieving the excellence they could.

Fellas calm down, we are 3-2 and still leading the NFC East. Yes the turnovers hurt us and that has to end but we were leading until the last play of the game. We played Pittsburg at home in the rain and lost on the last play of the game. We are going to lose games, this is the NFL. It's called karma people stop being so negative and negative things will stop happening. For all of you morons that keep calling for a change in QB, lets wait until the Season is over before we move on from MV7. Coles may be the QB of the future but we are only 5 games into the season. Be positive and this team may do something special, maybe not the SB but this team is in the top 4 of the NFC.

Castillo is a bad DC because they lost on a last second FG at Pitt? OK.

The Eagles will win the NFC East at 11-5, and all you haters can just pucker up and begrudgingly cheer. Bunch of geniuses and armchair QB's.

They lost two starting O-linemen, one a dominant LT. They need some time to gel there. I see the D getting better. I believe they will be a good team by the end of the year.

Reading you hater posts make me happy I moved to the south.

Eagles, same old, same old. The end goal is winning the Super Bowl. A good team?? I guess that's good enough for some, especially Laurie, filling the stands etc. This football team needs a short and long range plan to get us there. I feel that Mgmt. is satisfied with the status quo. and we will never see a championship with their obvious mind set. Positive thinking is a good thing, however Look at prior results with the same mindset that mgmt. has shown us.

Watching Brady and Manning on Tv. Wishing the eagles had a tall, smart Qb who stands in the pocket and throws the ball. Oh, what's that, they do. Nick Foles. Then why are they playing a mindless midget that's a turnover machine. He actually said he doesn't have trouble fumbling. And I thought Mc Nabb was stupid.

Reid has no balls? Going for it on 4th and 1 from his 30+/- and again later was an easy choice? Castillo? Pitts got 16 points. Vick? Questionable, but still better than KK. Nice last drive. Needs a little pine tar.

There record at the end of the season will be 9-7 if Vick can stop the turnovers or 8-8. They could Win the Division with 8-8 because this division is ad.

Vick is the problem. He sucks at reading the defense and is even worse at protecting the ball. He has no magic left in his body. We are all suckers just waiting to have a great big let down at the end of the season if we stay with Vick. There is NO WAY we should continue with his contract after this season. I guess we ride out the season and take what we can get full well knowing we are not super bowl quality.

Let Vick sink this ship and its trio of buffoon coaches. Worst use of challenges and timeouts I have ever seen. The Defensive scheme was mind boggling. MornHENwig should be tarred and feathered when he gets off the bus/plane, no right to be an offensive coordinator in this league.

Had them penciled in for a loss and to be 3-2 at this point so it is what it is. Those turnovers will haunt us all year. Surprised at how easily Vick loses the ball. It acts like a watermelon seed in his hands. Those weren't huge hits causing those fumbles. On the other hand the D played well holding The Steelers to 16 points, there was another late game drive to take the lead and losing there is no surprise. Won't lose sleep over it.

Really it is getting pathetic, another game that was winnable if they
had an upper echelon QB, and I don't want to hear that Vick took them
down the field in the end blah blah blah, that was two HUGE plays by
Shadey all world RB McCoy that brought down the field in the end?

They need to put Foles in cuz you aren't going anywhere with Vick
even if they make the playoffs?? Is there anyone really out there that
still thinks Vick is a SB QB??? I don't know if Foles is, but
you might as well see if he is the QB of the future, and bury
the Mike Vick experience, it's getting older than the Jimi Hendrix
one? Also, get a decent coach next year, not some cheap scrub
assistant, or college coach, pay a Gruden or Cowher to come in here
and take the team to the next level??

Oh and you think Foles can do better with this poor excuse of an o- line and its crazy knowbody sees that but they blame vick for everything even the defense not stopping them guys on 3rd and 12. Put Foles in and he wont ecen last a series behind that soft oline. The proof is there Bell sucks Mathis sucks Reynolds suck Todd Gerreman is sometiming. Go ahead and get Foles killed then Ill here something the offensive line then. You fake eagles fans are garbage, not even fans something like fair weather.

Why do so many football "experts" think that Michael Vick is so great? What has he ever won in the NFL? He's responsible for 11 turnovers so far this season and leads a team that's averaged 16 points a game. The Eagles are not going to win any championships with him. He may be "exciting" and fun to watch, but he's no leader and definitely not one of the elite quarterbacks. If the Eagles do not win at least one playoff game this season it's time to get rid of the $100 million man -- and maybe the entire coaching staff!

    Vick is, indeed, a liability.

Did anyone note how, on the first drive and in a panic, he just heaved the ball downfield blindly? Fortunately, it was not intercepted. Had I seen this in a high school, I could accept it. Not, though, from an NFL QB.

Also, it appeared that on his long throws, essentially he was just heaving it and hoping for something good to happen (it did not).

He has trouble reading defenses and anticipating pressure.

Oh yeah ... and the fumbles. 'nuff said.

Admittedly his OL was not up to speed, but that is no excuse for STUPID playmaking. Honestly, I have to believe that Nick Foles could not do any worse, and quite likely would play a much more mature, intelligent game.

Finally, don't know if Gruden would want this job, but I'd sure be interested in exploring the possibilities if I'm Lurie.

I think we are better off if Vick stays healthy and we continue to get results like this and ultimately end up out of the playoffs. Vick getting hurt almost automatically gives Andy another chance. Lurie needs to grow a pair and fire this band of clowns... and then cut Vick.

Even tho they made it, can't believe they went for it on 4th and 1 from their own 31 with 13 plus minutes left in the game. The play got stuffed and only because of McCoys' second effort did they get the first down. Stupid call.

In response to fan-74.The blame is not all on the offensive line,As Troy Aikman pointed out today ,Vick needs to understand that he needs to get rid of the ball sooner against certain blitz packages,Unfortunately Vick does not posess enough savy to understand that.Time to let Folles play to see if he is your quarterback of 2013 or not.How bad would it be around here if the Eagles were 0-5 which they could obviously be

The Esglesd have an excellent team at every position except quarterback, and trust me, Reid will say, "Vick' is my quarterback," until the bitter end and that is coming soon. Lone wolf, so you're saying Vick pl;ayed bad bnecause of the wide 9????????????????

Amen Shawnmack. And a physical one too. As is Jackson. As I've been saying for 2 and 1/2 years, you cannot win with mental and physical midgets. And we haven't and won't.

Asomugha has become a major liability. His poor play shouldn't be overshadowed by Vick's turnovers.

The turnovers cost the Birds in this one.

    1) When the eagles had the steelers on 3rd and 12 on the last drive, we did not blitz. When Ben has time he does a good job of finding receivers. We played zone and continued to rush 4 instead of being aggressive

    2) The steelers blitzed a lot. In the first half they sent 2 blitzers on Vick's right which would be his blind side. Vick stayed in the pocket and tried to move up in the middle. Don't know why he doesn't roll to his left and the birds cross a receiver from the right to give him a target to throw to. They have to be prepared for teams blitzing them on vick's right and have him roll to his strength.

    3) When you're going up against a desperate team who is very good at home, you have to take care of the ball.

    4) Our defense came up with no turnovers today. We didn't sack Ben, got some hits on him but need to get after Ben more. You can't let Ben have time or he will beat you.

    5) Another 10 or 11 hit game on Vick. He will not survive this kind of beating. No QB will. It's only a matter of time until he gets hurt getting his 10 or 11 times a game. We're also talking big hits. Ben was rarely hit hard. Vick was clobbered a number of times. Mike's gonna need more than Kevlar because the hits are way too many and too often.

I think Vick has become gun shy after being hit almost everytime he touches the ball. And I don.t think he has any confidence in the line protecting him any more.Replace Vick with Nick Foles and see how the eagles respond. After one or two games possibly bring back Vick.

3 fumbles by Vick- 2 Lost- the goaline one lost the game. 2 of them Vick was hit right at the ball with the defender helmet. Can't they just work on drills where Vick runs and covers up the ball with 2 hands like a running back?? Teach him to run like a running back. One arm holding the ball doesn't do it for him. He's too thin and ball gets knocked out easily. I actually like Vick without the turnovers. The playcalling and his decision making has cut out the INTs. Now why not just run "live" contact drills with Vick protecting the ball while running?? I think if they just drilled and practiced it, it can be fixed.

That loss was NOT on the defense. The Steelers had the ball for 34 minutes against 26 for the Eagles, never a good scenario for the defense. Still, the D allowed only 16 points. That should be enough to win. But it's not when the quarterback can't hold onto the ball and gives away points and possession time.

Vick is not an NFL capable quarterback not just worthy of benching, but cutting to save a couple mill. Hey Reid, three fumbles, holds the ball too long deciding eenie meenie minie mo, who shall I throw the ball to (on our side)........................

Vick's fumble on the 1 cost at least 3 points - if not 7. Those are the points that force Pittsburgh to go for a TD instead of a FG at the end. Who knows what the other fumble would have lead to, but the first one was killer!

I've said it before, but how could Foles do any worse? At least he's bigger and might have enough arm strength to hold onto the ball!

A couple of observations from todays game.First,Vicks turnovers were huge, once again he just makes to many mistakes and compromises his teams chances of winning. As I have said since the begining of the season. This team will never reach there goal with Vick at quarterback. You can not give points away in the NFL.Espesially against a tough opponent.Secondly, was very dissapointed with the defense today. We got run over by a team ranked 30 in rush offense. On the final drive Eagles showed a complete lack of emotion and desire. They had the Steelers 1st and 20 from the 10 yard line and simply allowed them to go right down the feild very easily.Dont seem to have a leader on the defensive side of the football.I wonder if Dawkins can still play. This team is very fortunate that they are not 0-5.Next hope for a championship is the sixers.

When the league thinks you are a fumbler, you become a fumbler... as defenders go after the ball on every play. Shame is that Vick is throwing the ball well. Amazing how Rapesberger is both sturdy and nimble in the pocket.

Not a Vick hater. We need to see another QB. Can't keep leaving points on the field with redzone turnovers. Maybe Foles can perform better. He may be able to see the field unlike Vick. We'll never know unless he is tried.

Bah, was gonna be a tough one to win, but they did have their shot. Oh well. ...Take care of business next week, go in the bye week 4-2, hopefully tighten up their game in those 2 weeks...and then start playing up to their capabilities.

PLEASE!! There is NO SUCH THING as a given with this team. I, for one, am still NOT sold on Castillo OR Vick. Moronweg leaves plenty to be desired in the play-calling department. Asomugha is over rated. Reid is loyal to a fault, and Limp-Wrist Lurie will NEVER make a change unless Reid himself decides to quit which I don't expect because this job funds his (considerable) hamburger stash.

Really, Einstein? Did you think that up all by yourself? I, for one, don't wanna hear some whiny little baby troll my post about what they're sold on or not sold on. How about this? I am sold that they will win next against the Lions, go into to the bye 4-2, get it together, win the game against the Falcons and will be 5-2 at that time.

Now go in cry your drink elsewhere...

First half offense was...offensive. The D had to be tired after being on the field so much. Shady is magical...he is nothing short of a magician. Bobby April....turn in your keys...it is time for you to go...our special teams are making hard for the rest of the team....D had a short field to work with, O has no magical moments on carries. April....is one weak link...and yeah...he will blame himself. Let him blame his way...far away. Give him his last check...anyone in Phila could do a better job coaching special teams other than that person....

Isn't this defense designed to play with a lead? And where's the Wide 9 when you need it most? Whatever happened prior to last 4 minutes means little. We had the lead and we blew it.

When Eli Manning threw 3 picks in the 1st half a couple of weeks ago, he then brought his team back to take the lead. Afterward, the story wasn't his 3 picks. It was the comeback.

Same thing here. Vick had a bad first half, but he came through when it counted. In fact, if he had ANY time left, he probably would have done it again.

The defense not only surrendered the lead, but it didn't leave any time for the offense to re-regain the lead.

Vick was good when it counted. 3rd and 12 and your d cant get off the field? the rookies played terrible today. boykin two big plays on the last drive, kendricks big miss tackles. It was a tough lost but the sky isnt falling we'll be ok. We have to have the toughest schedule this year its crazy. We've played most of the top defenses in the league

    Eagles fans are suckers.

This team continues to roll out an inferior product with Reid, Morningweg and Vick.

They are no where near the level of the Steelers, Patriots, Green Bay or even Atlanta in terms coaching accumene.

Eagles problems are on the sidelines (coaches) and their QB.
