DeSean, Kolb and the speed gun

POSTED: Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 1:14 PM

The question to DeSean Jackson on Wednesday afternoon was simple enough: compare the balls thrown by Donovan McNabb and Kevin Kolb. The answer was as you might expect.

"It's a little different," Jackson said. "Donovan has a lot of velocity on his football. Kolb throws a great ball, too, but sometimes it's just a little bit easier. Wide receivers, we can't get caught up in that. We just have to go out there and catch the football."

Jackson, the NFC's special teams player of the week after his 85-yard punt return touchdown on Sunday at Carolina, was asked to do the compare and contrast thing a number of times between McNabb and Kolb, and he did his best to avoid the questions. McNabb is unlikely to play Sunday because of a broken rib, although the Eagles have not ruled him out. In his absence, Kolb will get his first start as a pro.

McNabb has a super-strong arm -- to the point where receivers over the years have sometimes struggled with the velocity of some of his throws. Kolb's arm is not as strong but is viewed by most people as strong enough. You would think there would be some adjustment for the receivers, but Jackson really didn't want to go there. He just wanted to do platitudes, and to talk about the win last week.

"The biggest thing was, we were able to go into somebody else's home field and play together as a team," he said. "Anytime it happens like that, it's a tremendous thing to have. We just have to come home in front of our crowd, with the fans going crazy, and it should be fun. It's something we're looking for."

Regardless of the quarterback?

"As a receiver, as an offense, we can't sit there and get caught up with that," Jackson said. "At the end of the day, we still have a job to do, and that's to go out there and put points up on the board, score, and just play together as an offense. It shouldn't change anything we do."

I like Desean's Class act attitude mixed with a little bit of ego and confidence. It makes for a great character guy with lots of potential. Desean will be one of the best WR's in the game! He already is ....

Did we need Desean, or anyone, to confirm that McNabb has a stronger arm than Kolb? What was the individual asking the question looking for? Did he/she want DJ to say "yeah McNabb throws way harder and can get the ball down the field better" so that he/she could then write "oooooooooooooooh, Jackson says Kolb's arm is subpar!" and try to create some bogus controversy? I'm not usually one to rip the media for writing opinions or asking questions, but this is a ridiculous NON-story.

Desean's 'class act attitude' got us a 15-yard excess celebration penalty last game. He's a great player but still has some growing up to do.

Aahh, good to see he didn't take the bait. I know the press was pushing and is just dying for that quote to put on the back page to stir things up. Looks like they'll just have to make up something.

This is an unbelievably useless post. Honestly, please re-read this and recognize that absolutely nothing of substance was reported or said.

What with the press? Do they just look for stuff to cause problem? I think they are happier when things are going badly. WTF!!

I agree Craig and bobby... typical nonsense from philly writers. The best blog out here is MTC by Kapida. He actually writes up analysis on each plaer from each game, focuses on FOOTBALL and the intricacies of the game. THe rest of the bunch try to turn this into People magazine or US weekly.

Doesn't have a strong arm, doesn't have good speed, doesn't have good accuracy. What makes anyone think he is going to be an NFL QB?

I feel that Chaz, bobby, etc. Too much contrived drama and not enough MTC type analysis.

Bobby gets the prize. That's exactly what the reporter was looking for. Unfortunately in today's media, if you don't have a story or spin then you don't keep your job. Lonewolf and class were used in the same paragraph? what is this world coming to? Do you like anyone other than your right hand?

Nothing DeSean could say. McNabb throws a tough ball to catch; Kolb doesn't. But McNabb can squeeze it in there. Receivers have to catch whatever comes close to their area.

Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
