A messy W for Eagles

POSTED: Sunday, November 29, 2009, 4:17 PM

An Eagles-Redskins game tends to be an untidy bit of business. History seems to demand inelegance when these two teams meet. This one was no different.

But the Eagles won, 27-24.

That’s two in a row. That’s a 7-4 record. I’m not going to pretend to know what it means. I’m not going to pretend to understand starting a game at home in which you are a nine-point favorite with an on-sides kick -- an on-sides that failed, spectacularly, and led to an easy Washington touchdown. I’m not going to pretend to understand how the Eagles’ defense, which was murdered on third down by a Washington team down to its second tight end and its third running back, is going to hold together for the rest of the season.

The only certainty is that Donovan McNabb brought them back from a fourth-quarter deficit for the second straight week, and that David Akers made a 32-yard field goal with 1:52 left to win it, and that the Eagles’ defense held twice in the fourth quarter to preserve it.

Their record identifies them as a team with a chance. Their manner of achieving that record makes you wonder. But the league has never been about style points and it is not now.

A messy 7-4 is still 7-4.

Donovan seems to be getting into his usual late-season groove. Came about last year at Thanksgiving, and this year it came a week early. And how big of a beast was Avant on that key 4th quarter drive?

Good call, moderndaymesh. Avant was ridiculous! He's becoming a go-to guy.

How about that Eagles running game! McCoy could be the difference maker in December.

McNabb stunk most of the game - so did the coaching and play calling on both sides of the ball. I'm not a "hater". I have been a Reid and McNabb supporter for years, but they are too inconsistent. The Redskins offense kept making big 3rd down plays until the end - its time to ask hard questions about our defensive coordinator - are injuries to blame or is McDermott not up to the job? "Messy"? "You betcha."

where are all of the McNabb haters.....??? granted it was the depleted 'skins..but it is a "come from behind win" that these hater harp on...G Jacobs I agree. Shady and Weaver will hopefully be the difference. THEY NEED TO RUN WEAVER IN THE RED ZONE... please someone sent this message to Big Red...he is the power runner we have been waiting for...in a FB package but it is what it is....

I was depressed then quirky as the D held and David won the game. Where was the D for 3.5 quarters? But, the big thing is, will DeJean be OK for the rest of the season?????

You know, I guess those of you don't remember the Kotite, Marion Campbell years. This team is the second youngest in the NFL. They will be competing for years to come. This may not be the year with all these injuries, but they will be set for years to come. Several factors will play a part, but they are light years ahead of Wash, Clev, Buff, TB, and many others. Stay optimistic folks, and stop hating!

Our defense was pathetic on 3rd down today, but came up big in the end. The play calling on offense was, as usual, awful. The running game was doing well, but in the 3rd qtr we called only passing plays. That lead to 3 straight 3 and outs! Win or lose, Andy needs TO GO!

Eagles2010 - "think about it, how many teams would like 2 hav seven wins'. Answer: Any team with a losing record. Question: How many fans are happy with a 34-30-1 record over the last 5 years? Eagles look like a good team at 7-4 to you? By the way, I am 60 y.o. with a 42" chest and a 31" waist. I played and can outplay you in any sport, except field hockey, maybe.

There is no such thing as a bad win in the NFL- as for McNabb, I have ripped him all year but he was fine today- Celek was awful. If you make the playoffs in the NFL these days anything can happen.

The Eagles aren't playing down to their opponents. They just aren't that good, mainly because the defense has been ravaged by injuries.

This patchwork defense better find a pop-warner team to practice against. They do not know how to wrap up on the tackle. The Gnats and the Cowgirls will make them look foolish as it is now.

The Eagles like to keep us on the edge of our seats. with all the mistakes, dropped balls, 3 and outs We found a way not only to beat the Redskins we found a way to overcome beating ourself...

The games are enjoyable. Beyond the Vikes, Saints, Pats and Colts, the Eagle stand up pretty well. Injuries are such a big part of it. Look at Arizona struggle tonight without Warner. Expect some struggles if DJack is out for a while.

Fortunately, all of the NFC teams suck so we're on our way to the Super Bowl, baby!!! What?? The Saints? The Vikings? The Cardinals? Oops...never mind.

Could Michael Vick possibly tackle? Maybe he could be of some use then. Why is he on my team?

Two come from behind in the 4th quarter wins in a row. The Eagles are 7 and 4. I'm sick of the "Andy has to go" people. You want Rich Kotite and Ray Rhodes? You want Doug Pederson and Bubby Brister? You can have them I'll take Andy, Donovan and our above .500 record over the last 5 years. Andy and Donovan still give us our best chance to win. That is all.

I would also trade seven wins in for one SB victory also. But I certainly don't want my team franchise to be where Washington is. With that owner they will never make it back to the SB let alone a playoff. I think the last time the Deadskins won was 1990 or '91. That's long ago. Anything can happen when the playoffs start, ANYTHING! No doubt, the Birds should have won at least ONE SB. So far that is the black mark on this era. They need to win one soon to keep the faithful... faithful!

We were due a win in a game where we played poorly but still won the game. If history repeats we can get hot down the stretch and hopefully Dallas will self destruct. Win the division and anything can happen and probably will.

So Gordy wants DrBri to "go back to the men’s rest stop, a glory hole needs manning!". Well now we know where all the Reid/Mcnabb haters have their meetings! Aint love grand!

McNabb had 23 yards of offense in the third quarter. He did take them down for the last eleven points of the game, but he is still a scatter arm.

The play calling and the teams execution was pitiful. Eagles were favored by 9-12 points and barely won. What other team would do an off side kick on a team you were favored to beat????

The Eagles don't have a chance of winning the superbowl, neither does Minnesota without Petersen, Saints without Brees, Arizona with Warner or Fitz, the Patriots without Brady, the Colts without Manning. See where this is going...if the Eagles keep winning ugly they are playing in January and who knows what will happen. Eagle "fans" who can only find blame and fault should be force to live in Dallas with the other football idiots.

Why, why, why does Andy keep putting Vick in when #5 has momentum going? 2nd and goal, and in trots Vick. We ended up with 3 points at the end of the series. Pick your QB and stay with him unless he is hurt or inept! This wildcat/Vick in at QB bs has to stop. Oh, and when the running game is working, uh, stay with it!

Fast Eddie -were you watching the same game I was? Didn't you see the 3 consecutive drops by Celek that were all catchable? You people are unbelievable. First it's Donovan can't bring a team back from behind, then after he does it two weeks in a row, he's a scatterarm? I'm pretty sure that drives of 90 and 70 yards against the league's 4th best defense is getting it done. Don Logan, you've got it right.

Gordy do you have a portable tv with you when you hang out at the glory holes in the men's room? Because your posts read like you have never watched a game in your life. Try watching one, it might make your posts seem less moronic (which shouldn't be hard considering the low bar you have set).

rich hoffman at his boring best. Doesn't anyone just enjoy watching a football game and enjoying the action including these so called imperfections, that really are just part of the game. He takes himself much too seriously, and should probably just publish social research.

7-4 is fine but does anyone really think they are anywhere good enough to beat the Vikings or Saints? They have lost to the 3 best teams they have played this year: Saints, Cowboys, and Chargers. And could all you Vick lovers tell me why he is on the team?

KMG is right. The pretty lousy Eagles team of last year made the playoffs (as a Wild Card) by the skin of their teeth. And then went all the way to the NFC Championship game! Where we will not talk about their abhorent clock management and non-existent Defense for 3 quarters...
