Flyers snooze, lose

Saturday, April 30, 2011, 5:53 PM
Another game, another goaltender yanked. If these are the Flyers, and this is the 2011 playoffs, it almost comes as a surprise when a goalie makes it through to the end. They have played eight post-season games and the starting goaltender now has been pulled out of four of them. Saturday afternoon... Read more

Why the Eagles will probably trade tonight

Thursday, April 28, 2011, 11:13 AM
The Eagles, you might have noticed, are about as antsy as any team on draft day. Because they're almost always good in the regular season, they almost always have a pick in the bottom third of the first round -- and they're always working, it seems, either to move up or move down. Most years, they... Read more

Flyers crush Sabres in Game 7

Tuesday, April 26, 2011, 10:18 PM
The nucleus of a sports team gets only so many chances to define itself. Injuries intervene. Pucks bounce oddly. A better opponent gets in the way. Age happens. And then, almost always sooner than anyone ever predicts, it is time to trade away a piece or two in an attempt to create a better karma. We... Read more

The magic of Game 7

Tuesday, April 26, 2011, 1:29 PM
You do this long enough, you get to see a few things. Tonight will be the ninth time I have been in the arena when the Flyers played a Game 7. Of the previous eight, the first and last were the most memorable, unforgettable bookends. The first was Game 7 of the 1987 Stanley Cup Final at Edmonton.... Read more

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Monday, April 25, 2011, 7:43 PM
Les Bowen warned me this morning, after reading my story out of Buffalo, that the emails would be coming soon. Years ago, he said he did what I did -- made a reference to the John Belushi line in "Animal House" that asked "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?" He didn't explain it in his... Flyers force Game 7

Sunday, April 24, 2011, 6:30 PM
BUFFALO -- We have been talking about the Flyers and their goaltenders for a quarter-century now -- but maybe never more than now. Six games. Three different starting goalies. Sergei Bobrovsky begat Brian Boucher, who begat Michael Leighton -- and none of them could avoid a meltdown. It has been... Read more

Flyers comeback halted in OT

Friday, April 22, 2011, 10:35 PM
At first, this was going to be a story about the disaster that was Brian Boucher’s night in the Flyers’ goal, and about how coach Peter Laviolette, now desperate, has spun the wheel of goaltending roulette one more time. Then it became a story about something completely different. The... Read more

Sabres even series

Wednesday, April 20, 2011, 10:12 PM
BUFFALO -- It was a wild night and a wildly-entertaining game but, in the end, the Flyers lost their chance to do the stranglehold thing on their opening round playoff series with the Sabres. Instead, because of their 1-0 defeat on Wednesday night, the Flyers go home now with the series tied at two... Read more

Boosh is back a winner

Monday, April 18, 2011, 9:45 PM
BUFFALO -- The chanting started 30 seconds into the game, before Brian Boucher had even seen a shot, and it returned at times through the night. Boo-shay, Boo-shay went the sing-song, and it hung there, mocking, hoping, ultimately pointless. Because Boucher is back. He is a starting goaltender in... Read more
About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com Reach Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com.
