Here's the answer: They should get the most out of Hamels this season, make the Playoffs and hope that he contributes to another World Series victory. When that happens, we break the bank to sign him. If it looks like they won't be making the playoffs, they should trade him to a contender and then try to re-acquire him when Howard is completely healthy (after this season when Hamels is a F.A.).

I would sign him as soon as they are able. He has become the Phils' ace. With the injuries to Lee, Worley, and now Halladay, Hamels value will only increase as long as he himself does not get injured. Who knows, with Blanton's recent underwhelming performances, he is probably pitching with an injury.

This isn't just the Phillies decision, in fact ultimately it's Cole's. I don't know why everyone is so sure the Phillies are still his first choice.

Hamels is from north San Diego county about an hour from LA. The Dodgers have now have a good team and plenty of money and they Love Hamels. The papers here say no one will outbid them for Hamels. I don't think the Phils will match 6 years, $150 million.

If the Phillies are prepared to let Hamels walk in free agency, they're better off trading him now and at least getting some good prospects in return. They may as well face the fact that they're not getting a home town discount, especially with the type of year that Hamels is having. With Halladay breaking down and Lee proving to be quite human, this team is in disarray. Can they really afford to let Hamels go?

There's an immediate assumption that Cole will just play for the Dodgers. That makes zero sense, just because he's from California. Money is money, if the Phillies step up to the plate with the right deal, he will stay.

Cole is from LA but his home is in Philly now and has been for a long time. He also has family in Boston. It is just as possible he would like to stay on the east coast and they love him here in Philly also .Cole also loves it here also. Philly also has the money so to say he would only go to LA is silly. He will go to who gives him the most years. LA is far from the only team that has the money to get him if they want him. Yanks, Texas, Angels or Boston could be right there with what LA will give him. Where his hometown is makes no difference. He has his whole life to live in his home town. If we are in this thing there is no way we trade him at the deadline. Ruben might have to bite the bullet and pay him if Cole wants to stay here.. To suggest Cole would like it in LA more then then here is pure speculation. Only Cole knows where he wants to be if the price is right `the pr will be hard to overcome if they let him go for prospects and we are still in the race. Worse yet is to let him walk for 2 picks

Hamels will be the ace of the staff if he stays here - if he goes to LA he will be a 2 or a 3.
The money will probably be the same.
In that scenario, I expect him to stay here.
Why is nobody talking about giving him a contract equal in lenghth to Lee ?
Hamels has been a pretty darn good pitcher since the day he arrived in the majors.
Not too many, even the elite, can that be said about.

It's time to get over the idea that the ball is in the Phillies court and they can "Just sign him!" Money is money but Cole is a competitor and will want to play for a team with a chance to win. If the majority of the people who comment here are right about the Phillies grim future why would he sign here? Does he want to be the "Ace" of a lousy team of has beens playing in an empty ballpark? He's also been here long enough to know all this adoration can and probably will turn sooner rather than later. All the Phils fans so desperate to keep him now will be
screaming about the lousy contract he "forced" us into. I hope he warned Cliff Lee.

Hamels is the only guy who seems to really hunger for titles on the Phillies. I think he goes where he thinks he has the best chance to win rings if money is equal. I think the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Nationals would all throw big dollars at him. Remember, Lee left $20 million guaranteed on the table to choose the Phillies over the Yankees, so there are definitely teams with the wherewithal to outbid the Phillies and who likely have more promising prospects in Hamels' prime years-- that's all on Amaro.

As I said in another post: rube let the window of opportunity close by not signing Cole last off season. Could have signed him then to a number of years and at less money than now. He is 8-1 and the new ace. So we have to now be in a bidding war,or trade him. Knowing how Rube works we maybe can get a 38 year old #b man and a dead arm 40 year old pitcher for him. Maybe a $100 just to sweeten the deal!

It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
