More cops; strict curfew

POSTED: Friday, August 5, 2011, 3:07 PM

Mayor Nutter said Friday that he would put more police on street patrol and make sure they enforce curfews for young people in an effort to prevent crimes caused by children and teens randomly attacking people in the city.

"To the few who think they can get away with acting violently and disrespecting our city, you will be caught, and there are serious consequences," Nutter said in a news release.

The city's current curfew law says children under the age of 13 must be home by 10 p.m., and young people between the ages of 13 and 18 must be home by midnight.

Most of the mob attacks have occurred between 7 and 9PM...this should work great.

I'm sure this will do tons of good, since the mob attacks have been happening before curfew; some in broad daylight. Does anyone at city hall think before they speak?

What would Frank Rizzo (as police commissioner) do ? That's what the city needs to do. This city certainly has the ability to stop the problem, the politicians and commissioner just don't have the desire/intestinal fortitude. They are terrified of offending the minority community. It will take a tragedy (either an innocent tourist beaten to death or mob participants being gunned down by a vigilante) to resolve this issue.

Hey, I first proposed the Frank Rizzo question after Kevin Riordan's piece earlier this week. :) But you are right on.

Take away the free transpasses. Does anyone else think that if Frank Rizzo were still alive and serving as Police Commissioner or Mayor, this city would have never have experienced more than one of these flash mobs? Has anyone heard a peep about this incident, or even lately, from the much-hyped and no-action 10,000 men?

Follow-up: Center City is under-policed and always has been. There are cops clearly visible at most corners in New York City, especially Manhattan. Center City Philly never has a dedicated foot patrol presence except for special events or knee jerk responses like this one. Most police I see are in patrol cars yakking on cell phones and the ones I do see out of their cars are texting away.

@ 18 you can legally drink and drive, get married, be drafted into the armed services, fight and die for the country. But have to be in your home and off the streets of Philadelphia. Can anyone one say police state? Life in the "liberal", "progressive" world.

Sorry, but the last time I checked, drinking is still illegal for me and I'm 20 yrs old. Also, drinking & DRIVING has never been legal. For anyone. Honestly, I agree with the age limit being 18 because many young adults, my age and younger, act like CHILDREN. Sure, increasing the amount of police on the street will help a bit, but children are becoming less afraid of them everyday. I believe what they need is a PARENT to tell their butts to stay in the house, where 13-16 yr olds belong at 9 & 10 at night.

Whatever happened to the "come home before the street lights come on" rule?

They used that phrase back when people lived as families in places called home.
The phrase became irrelevant with the advent of single teenage moms living on the streets or in their grandmother's basement.
