Nutter to Draw Laborers Support

One of former Mayor John F. Street's biggest financial backers - the Laborers District Council of Philadelphia & Vicinity - is throwing its weight behind Mayor Nutter in what is so far an uncontested primary.

The union is expected to endorse the Democratic mayor for re-election at the Convention Center at 11 a.m. tomorrow. It is the latest in a series of weekly endorsements that the campaign is matter-of-factly rolling out.

The largely African-American union supported one of Nutter's four rivals - Philadelphia state Rep. Dwight Evans - in the 2007 Democratic primary. Then, a few days before the 2007 general election, in which Nutter faced Republican Al Taubenberger, the laborers gave a last minute $19,000 contribution to the man who was most certainly to become mayor. That represented the union's first donation to Nutter, who previously served 15 years on City Council.
