Nutter joins chorus attacking Romney's '47 percent' remarks

POSTED: Tuesday, September 18, 2012, 10:01 AM

Mayor Nutter is joining the chorus of Obama supporters criticizing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romey for suggesting nearly half of Americans are dependent on the federal goverment and are not likely to vote for him.

The following is Nutter's statement as distributed by the Obama campaign:

"The fact that a candidate for president - in a closed door event with donors - said that 47% of Americans are 'dependent on Government' and 'believe they are victims' is beyond shocking. That he doubled down on those comments in public is unfathomable. But most deplorable about Mitt Romney's comments is who he is insulting - an overwhelmingly majority or the 47% he is referring to are seniors, working families, students or people with disabilities. The vast majority of these Americans pay a significant percentage of their income in taxes, whether they are federal payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes or other state and local taxes. They often pay even a higher share of their income in these taxes than wealthier families, like Mitt Romney's. How can Mitt Romney continue to run for president when he has categorically written off half of the American people?"

Ironic - all comment sections would have been completely turned off on this story had it been the big O making the statement.

Eh - how's Nutter any different? He refuses to negotiate with working people who haven't had a contract in 5 years and wants to eliminate a retirement system.
It's a new day and Mitt's way for Mikey.

100% correct. That arrogant fraud Nutter's actions speak louder than his words. He is anti-middle class and against quality jobs. His actions against the fire fighters and his draconian proposals to DC 33 and 47 are evidence.

Mr. Mayor....it's quite simple. While Romney is a buffoon in a number of ways I'll be happy to tell you who he was referring to. He was referring to your constituents...you know, the ones that have not paid property taxes in years....the ones that owe $515 million dollars that you won't go after because to do so would alienate them. The ones that are crying for more money to be poured into the schools even though they are not in any way contributing. Clean up your own house before you comment on something a national candidate said.

We must be living in 2 different cities then. Philadelphia has fared pretty well all things considered under Nutter's watch. Our city is doing far better than a lot of the other cities/regions around the country that have been hit hard due to the economic recession. City population is actually growing according to the 2010 census due to an influx of people moving back to the city from the burbs. Just look around at all of the new construction projects around the city. I haven't seen this many cranes up in the last 20 years.

Uh?...Photo opp administration while murder, city unemployment, taxes are all WAY UP...City services lacking, no ability to get anything thru City Council, and a lack of transparency over SRC,PSD,PHA, something he initially ran on...He panders to whomever he's speaking to, and considers Philadelhia a "satellite city"...No thank you.

I'd go as far as to say that the city is in a state of prosperity. Sure, many bad neighborhoods are still bad, but many have improved. People are lining up to buy homes in certain neighborhoods and the cranes are multiplying in Center City.

Really? If the city is "in a state of prosperity", then why do taxes keep getting raised?

Has Nutter completely checked out from running this city? Stop kissing up to Obama and get back to being mayor. Nutter is truly clueless.

47% don't pay taxes....what's the problem with Romneys statement? The democrat strategy since the New Deal is to buy blocs of votes with tax money...

Nutter to his Democratic constituents..."I won't make you pay your $600M in back property taxes if you vote for me. Instead, I'll increase the taxes on the only contributing members to growth in Philadelphia...those residents in Center City." NUTTER = COMPLETE JOKE

Romney is 100% correct. And who exactly would give a shred of cred to anything stated by Michael Nutter (and released by the Obama administration)??? Beyond ridiculous.

I'm angry too. At Nutter as he continues to increase taxes each year and shows nothing but wasteful spending and mismanagement. I'm angry because those that owe the city millions for back taxes are not forced to pay, I'm angry for the wasteful spending footing the bill for the Labor Day concert, I'm angry because you say you are for the working person but refuse to settle contacts with the firemen and city workers. I'm angry because all you know how to do is invent and raise taxes. I'm angry because you were instrumental in hiring Carl Greene and Arlene Ackerman and giving the store alway to them and continuing to throw money at the school district instead of making them accountable. I'm angry because you allowed street signs to be replaced with new signs that were not needed throughout the city. I'm angry because you used city funds for you and your possee to attend the National Democratic Convention for your own self advancement. I could go on but the bottom line is you are taxing the working people to death and killing this once vibrant city. And for that I AM ANGRY.

So this is where the brown shirt meeting is. What a bunch of whining losers yopu repugnican frauds are. You're too stupid and in blind lock-step with this right wing nonsense to realize that this bumbling bozo of a candidate of yours is talking about you and people (and I'm being kind here) like you and others of your ilk. But then again it is a stretch to believe that any of you are anything more than basement dwellers with way too much time on your hands.

To truly find his place in this world, Mitt Romney needs to have a sex change operation and then be parachuted into a radical muslim controlled area of the world in a soiled dress, with a torn Quran and a copy of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion in his purse. See if money buys you happiness then Mitt. Don't forget to tell the local kaBobs how influential you are at home. Explain economic theories with your captors. Talk fast! There won't be a whole lot of time to waste.

David Brooks, NY Times Sep 17, 2012:
"(Romney's) comment suggests a few things. First, it suggests that he really doesn’t know much about the country he inhabits. Who are these freeloaders? Is it the Iraq war veteran who goes to the V.A.? Is it the student getting a loan to go to college? Is it the retiree on Social Security or Medicare?
It suggests that Romney doesn’t know much about the culture of America. Yes, the entitlement state has expanded, but America remains one of the hardest-working nations on earth. Americans work longer hours than just about anyone else. Americans believe in work more than almost any other people. Ninety-two percent say that hard work is the key to success, according to a 2009 Pew Research Survey.
It says that Romney doesn’t know much about the political culture. Americans haven’t become childlike worshipers of big government. On the contrary, trust in government has declined. The number of people who think government spending promotes social mobility has fallen.
The people who receive the disproportionate share of government spending are not big-government lovers. They are Republicans. They are senior citizens. They are white men with high school degrees. As Bill Galston of the Brookings Institution has noted, the people who have benefited from the entitlements explosion are middle-class workers, more so than the dependent poor."

ghall1961 said it all! While not easy to hear, what Romney said was 100% true. He wont get the 47% of the voters because that percentage is in lock step with the President. So all he's saying is he's not trying to court their vote. Makes sense to me.

David Brooks, NY Times 17 Sep 2012:
"In 1980, about 30 percent of Americans received some form of government benefits. Today, as Nicholas Eberstadt of the American Enterprise Institute has pointed out, about 49 percent do.
In 1960, government transfers to individuals totaled $24 billion. By 2010, that total was 100 times as large. Even after adjusting for inflation, entitlement transfers to individuals have grown by more than 700 percent over the last 50 years. This spending surge, Eberstadt notes, has increased faster under Republican administrations than Democratic ones."

How can anyone not see that the Democratic Machine in this city alone breeds generation upon generation of citizens who have no personal responsibility in terms of education, employment or self-control (how many babies with how many men?) Give me give me give me....more people in the cart than pulling it and I am sick to death of pulling!

The truth is that Mitt Romney is correct. Look around the neighborhoods at the amount of people that are just hanging out. Look at the amount of people that are using public assistance. How many are looking for work. There is no pride any more. During the depression People would do anything to make money for food, sweep streets, sell produce anything at all for their families well being. Now I hear comments such as I don't need to work I am eating steak on the state, meaning free money, no worries. Where is the work ethic now. This country was built on hard work not government freebies.

At least we won't have to put up with another VP visit to the Wachovia center like Palin's visit last election. (HTML deleted)

Oh, boy--Nutter speaks! Is he concerned with the incredible fact that 47% of Americans pay no federal income tax while the government spends and borrows huge amounts? I guess not. Nope. He's just "angry" that Romney pointed that out. Good ol' Nutter--a true Democrat.

Nutter pretends to be for the middle class, just not the middle class in philadelphia. tax the middle class more, and build more public housing, that's a tried and true philosophy for driving out a tax base. who's gonna pay taxes if the government subsidizes most of the housing and the city workers are are getting paid near the poverty line. let me also say that mitt romney would absolutely favor the rich. is it even a secret anymore? but there is some truth to what he said. i believe there are a percentage of people who mainly rely on the government to live, so they obviously would not vote for a president who apparently would look to reduce their only source of income.why is everyone acting surprised by this?

still no logical intelligent liberal response here, only Romney is rich. i am glad romney is rich. i am happy people make successes of themselves as opposed to being dregs of the earth spending my tax money to keep them with three hots and a cot. here is a one face that liberals love to ignore but that doesnt change its validity: life isnt fair. choose to work even harder or chose to be a liberal victim and cry and then disparage those who worked hard and made better life decisions with your envy. hysterical. please someone explain why it is acceptable that 47% of people dont contribute to our income tax revenue? lets not even get into the fact they use more government services than do those who actually pay income tax

Nutter is a disgrace of a mayor. Lost all respect for him when he slammed Romney for addressing education issues on a trip to West Phila. He and Seth Williams. Should be ashamed of themselves. Always bringing race into the picture and dividing the people along racial lines. Can't wait to vote for Mitt Romney. He will work to lift up the people so that they can become employed and receive a paycheck that would bring in more money than any government check ever will.

Romney, Obama, and Nutter are all servants of the plutocracy. Mitt the twit was speaking for all of them. Nutter is privatizing our public spaces and transferring as much money, tax abatements, etc. to the plutocracy as he can while he is trying to destroy public education, libraries, etc. There is absolutely no difference in the goals of these two corporate parties. If Obama is Bush's 3rd term, the peace president is Bush on steroids! This vision and plan for throwing away half of the people of the country or Philadelphia is the goal of both corporate parties. If you are not voting for a third party, your vote is wasted.
