Nutter casts ballots for Victorino
Troy Graham
Slow news day at City Hall? Perhaps.
A little bit of hero worshipping? Probably.
We here in the Hall yawn at lots of staged media events, but nothing is sure to bring out the cameras and the microphones like an appearance by a real sports star. Therefore, no surprise that Mayor Nutter's office was packed with press a few moments ago when Phillies centerfielder Shane Victorino came calling.
Ostensibly, the reason for the visit was so the mayor could cast a couple all-star ballots for the Flyin' Hawaiian, who is on the cusp of making the team. Voting ends today at 4 p.m. and there is no limit on how many votes one person can cast (a fact that sparked a few jokes about old-style Philly politics and the vote early, vote often ethos).
Shane stayed for a few minutes, answered a few questions, signed a few autographs. He seemed quite comfortable in the realm of politics. Then again, his father is a city councilman back in Hawaii.
