Lobbying lawmakers, Nutter sleeps in Harrisburg

POSTED: Tuesday, August 4, 2009, 11:16 AM

Mayor Nutter slipped out of Philadelphia yesterday - and stayed the night in Harrisburg. He's roaming the Capitol hallways again today.

Spokesman Doug Oliver says Nutter left Philadelphia about 1 p.m. yesterday, a few hours after holding a news conference in Northeast Philadelphia about the devastating budget decisions he might be forced to make if the General Assembly does not approve a city sales tax increase and pension changes, including a two-year delay in city payments into the fund.

In fact, the House is poised to vote on those changes - House Bill 1828 - today. But as the Inquirer reports, the Senate is, for the moment, unwilling to take any similar action until a state budget agreement is reached.

No word yet on exactly who Nutter is visiting today, or what his agenda otherwise entails.

If the state doesn't come through, watch how quickly he blames them for the city's problems. Nutter is turning out to be just another Philly politician, and not the reformer he claimed to be. Very disappointing in general. I wish I could have my vote back...I might've actually voted for Taubenberger.

Right nitz, Philly is in a bad way and we can blame city hall for it. It is payback time and Harrisburg is letting him know the hard way.

You got that right. This whole Harrisburg thing is just a smoke screen. His real goal is to set them up for the blame. I'm not sure if even he believes in his line of BS.

Isn't that a sorry spectacle? The Mayor of Philadelphia going to Harrisburg to grovel for mercy at the State Legislature? Sad...

MaggieL - I vote for candidates, not a political party. I've never, ever voted a straight-ticket...I like to put a little more thought into my vote than a simple knee-jerk reaction based on party affiliation. I guess you've never voted for a candidate who later disappointed you.

There are plenty of opportunities that Nutter is missing and I think that is the source of peoples' frustration. When there is a will, there is a way. Nutter's job is to solve problems, not to ask for someone else to bail him out.

No, the problems facing the city are certainly not all of his making, but's he providing weak leadership here. He's talked tough and defied the state before (gun laws, cell phone ban) but now, he's groveling to the state for something he knows they won't deliver. In turn, he will conveniently blame the state for the cuts that will be coming. This guy surely inherited a huge mess but he's been short on solutions. Ever listen to his "Ask the Mayor" segment on KYW? He talks a lot and says nothing...and is condescending to boot. He painted himself as the anti-politician, but he's proven to be just like all the rest. He hasn't distinguished himself at all. And by the way, I live in the city.

This Mayor, who I initially supported, is an anti-business, anti-development and anti-casino loser.

Annoyedwithyou you are right he did not cause most of this financial crisis but he has added to it more that he help reduce/get under control costs by growing non essential government in this city under his watch. Remember he knew there would be a fiscal problem and he hired staff at 20percent higher wages and this staff has added staff(PR), drivers and consultants that were not there prior to Mayor Nutter.People are most upset because Mayor Nutter solution is to raise taxes and thats not what he campaigned on as the road he would take to getting the city back on track.

ARE PEOPLE ON HERE IDIOTS? He's not asking for a dime from harrisburg he's asking for the the ability to structure taxes and pension payments in Philadelphia....He didnt cause this mess and there really no other alternatives.....I wouldn't matter who was in office The City would be in the same situation asking for the same ability to structure taxes and pension payments.....
