Goo Goo Dolls to headline Welcome America celebration

The Goo-Goo Dolls will headline Philadelphia’s annual Welcome America celebration commemorating the nation’s 234th birthday, Mayor Nutter announced at a press conference Thursday morning.

Welcome America will run from June 26 to July 4th, culminating as always in the massive Parkway concert and fireworks show on the night of the 4th, which city officials tout as the “largest free concert in America.”

"If I were the Pointer Sisters I could not be more excited," Nutter said.

Nutter also announced that Morris Day and The Time will perform on Saturday June 26.

Deep into budget talks, Nutter also mentioned the economic impact of Welcome America.

"We also get a tremendous economic benefit from these activities," Nutter said. "This summer we will host about a million and half visitors."

As he announced the acts, the mayor was joined by people in colonial garb and a giant walking penguin, which is apparently a Wawa mascot. Wawa, the event’s chief sponsor, contributed more than $3 million to make Welcome America possible.
