Braxton Launches Controller Campaign

February 17, 2009- Former Court of Common Pleas Judge, John L. Braxton launches his campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination to serve as Controller of the City of Philadelphia. Braxton announced his campaign, saying "Philadelphia taxpayers need a Controller who is ready to meet the fiscal challenges facing the City of Philadelphia in the upcoming years. I am running for Controller, because I believe that I have the experience and leadership to monitor every penny spent and to find the resources necessary to keep essential services, libraries, and fire stations in our neighborhoods. I will be an independent Controller- unbought and unbossed."

Braxton is a lifetime Philadelphian, with an accomplished career of public service in law, business, and financial administration. Braxton served as a Judge in the Court of Common Pleas and as an Assistant District Attorney and Chief of the Municipal Court Unit in the District Attorney's Office.

In addition to his service on the bench and in the District Attorney's Office, Braxton has developed expertise in commercial and economic development and long-term strategic business planning in both the private and public sectors. Braxton served as Chair of the Board of Berean Federal Savings Bank, Vice President for Phoenix Management Services, Inc., Chair of the Board of the Philadelphia Commercial Development Corporation, Chair of the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors of the Intellisource Group, Inc., and as a member of the Pennsylvania Minority Business Development Authority.

A longtime member of Calvary Episcopal Church, Braxton resides in Northern Liberties with his wife Linda. The couple has one son and two grandchildren. With his active public life, Braxton still finds time to serve as Treasurer of the Northern Liberties Neighbors Association and on the boards of many other nonprofit organizations.

Braxton indicated that his campaign will seek to encourage transparency and public involvement in city spending and services. "As Controller, I will ensure that City agencies and officials are responsible, responsive, and above reproach in terms of ethics and efficiency." Braxton added.
