Committee of Seventy wades into BRT fight
Patrick Kerkstra
The Committee of Seventy waded into the the BRT's fight with the Nutter administration today, calling on city voters to approve a May ballot measure that would abolish the agency. The non-partisan watchdog group also announced that it was considering joining the city in its opposition to a suit filed by the BRT against Mayor Nutter and City Council last month.
“This lawsuit by the BRT is completely within character,” Committee of Seventy CEO and Executive Director Zack Stalberg said. “The Board is wasting taxpayers’ money and simultaneously trying to do them harm. And, to make matters worse, these officials won’t even come clean and explain their actions.”
See the organization's press release below.
Vote to Kill BRT 4 9 10

Comment removed.- Hmmm BRT is appointed by Judges whom sit for life therefore BRT appointees are not tied to the debt riddled city which loves to increase taxes. NOW THE CITY WANTS CONTROL OF BRT SO IT CAN RAISE TAXES TO PAYOFF ITS MASSIVE BORROWING...Killing BRT will result in massive increases of taxation to the citizens of Philly. I have a better idea. How about the city cut its spending!!!
I thought that non-profit organizations couldn't get involved in political matters or try to influence elections or else they would lose their tax-exempt status. Now the Comm of 70 is putting out a press release specifically geared toward influencing the outcome of an election/voting matter. How can they do that and still keep their tax-exempt status? Sha they are above the law. Just like council and the mayors office. Why doesn't the ethics board intervene on their exempt status? Because 70 is controlled by the Mayor. Zack, tell the people what they are going to do once the Mayor's office gets control of the BRT. Cleanup, sorry but I am really not impressed with many in this administration, so for you to expect that you will get proffessionals from this administration to work on our assesments you are losing it buddy. This guy needs cash fast. He has three contracts to negotiate, lost a casino, no other revenue sources. He has spent millions on a 311 service that although they are trying really can't get it to work or function. We are not getting the services that we are paying for. Mr. Nutter and his crew should leave so we as a city can move forward. POD
