Chris Matthews celebrates DNC pick, talks with Nutter on 'Hardball' tonight

Chris Matthews, who wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post throwing his support behind Philadelphia, planned to have Mayor Nutter and Ed Rendell on his show, Hardball, Thursday night.

Chris Matthews, a Philadelphia native and host of MSNBC's Hardball, celebrated the DNC picking Philadelphia Thursday.

In a phone chat, that seemed as much about celebrating the news with a local as it was about offering insight, Matthews said, "I think recognition is vital to a city and I've always been frustrated and dismayed by the way Philadelphia gets overlooked, passed over."

Matthews wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post throwing his support behind Philadelphia.

He is scheduled to interview Mayor Nutter and Ed Rendell on his show tonight at 7 p.m.

Matthews said conventions today, almost meaningless politically, can't simply nominate a candidate.

"It has to produce a theme for television and what better place to talk about marriage equality or equal pay in the workforce for women or African American progress in this country than Philly?...If the Democrats do it right they will open every session with pictures of the Liberty Bell, Elfreth's Alley, The Rocky statue," he said. "They will bring a spirit to the convention on television that you don't get in Columbus or Brooklyn."
