Nutter wins praise from Esquire

POSTED: Thursday, November 17, 2011, 5:03 PM

Mayor Nutter is described as a “no nonsense truth-teller” in an upcoming issue of Esquire magazine, putting the mayor on a list of 20 “Americans of the Year.”  It’s rarefied company. Others on the list include the late Steve Jobs, founder of Apple; billionaire investor Warren Buffett; Harvard professor Elizabeth Warren, the champion of the federal government’s newest consumer protection agency, and local entrepreneur Todd Carmichael, co-owner of the coffee company La Colombe Torrefaction, honored for his work trying to revive the coffee industry in Haiti.

The theory of Esquire’s list is to honor “those who have brought out the best of us in 2011.”  Of Nutter, the magazine gives him praise for the budget-cutting that reduced his local popularity. It describes his reaction to the economic downturn that struck soon after he took office:  “Nutter immediately made tough choices: payroll cuts. Increases in taxes. Cuts in services. Shifting police veterans from desk work to patrol.  But the city didn’t fall apart...." It cites the city's reduced murder rate, the 311 information system, the redevelopment of the Navy Yard and the city's growth in the 2010 census.

Some political philosophy from the mayor himself: “If you have a deep-seated need to be loved and admired every day, you shouldn’t be in politics. You should go work at a pet store.”

did they even visit this city. what budget cuts? he didn't announce one layoff. he hasn't enacted furlough days for cops. all he's done in response to every problem is raise taxes. how are those new contracts with 401k's for city employees? what about making the underfunded pension problem worse by delaying payments and extending the period for making it solvent to 50 yrs? where was the mayor when ackerman was running the PSD into the ground and ignoring anti-asian hate crimes at So. Phila. HS? where was the mayor when carl greene was running wild at PHA?

i don't know what's worse, the mayor's job performance or the inquirer and daily news's journalistic misconduct in refusing to hold hizzoner accountable

I see the racists, anti-Semites, and no nothing idiots are reading today....FYI.. The mayor has no control over the PHA (Greene) or School District (Ackerman).....Pensions System Has been bad since Dilworth was mayor(ie forever)...Every mayor since has made cosmetic changes to the kick the bucket down the road...now that economy is the city's finances are in bad shape you expect the mayor to magically solve a 30 yr old problem...?

Really! You have to be kidding. The mayor has gone back on everything he stood for. He tried to close libraries and has closed fire stations. He is playing with numbers and making the city pension problems worse. He has laid off city workers that make between 35 to 60K but has hired people like DiBerardinis and others at over 100K.
You must be one of his MANY deputy mayors!

Mayor Nutter has done a fantastic job. And has anybody noticed that homicides have decreased under the watch of Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Gillison, the former public defender that the police so adamantly opposed when the mayor appointed him?

Sanchez, please explain exactly what Gillison did that decreased homicides in Philadelphia? Unless you have extraordinary wisdom, your claim is indefensible and defies all logic and reason. Gillsion did hire a high ranking administer who is a convicted felon who almost murdered a man during a wedding reception. Gillison paid him almost $100K, but never bothered to ensure that the adminsitrator paid the medical bills he owed to the vicitm.

He has allowed the non-reps to be screwed with no raise for four YEARS, in addition to taking the salary steps away. How can you praise him for screwing his management! This is a joke.

Well deserved Mr. Mayor. Your honesty and hard work and legendary. As for Carmichael, just scoring Lauren Hart as a bride you put you on the list by itself.

    Sanchez,

    You are only partially correct.

Homicides are down from 2007, which Commissioner Johnson's worst year. But, homicides have been CLIMBING for the past 2 years. Burglaries and homicides are ALSO up significantly under Nutter.

Oh boy. Nutter HAS done some good things. But, he has not even attempted to make a dent in the corruption that plagues civil service, from top to bottom. He knows it. It's all smoke and mirros when it comes to favors and kick backs and no show employees.

Correction top my last post: Burglaries and auto thefts are up significantly under Nutter. Homicides are trending upward for the past 2 years.

Also, although Gillison has been a net-positive for the City, he's wasted LOTS of money on orphaned technology projects for the police; like the 2 useless MIRV trucks, and the non-existent Real Time Crime Center (a vaporware with 9 cops assigned to it who do NOTHING). Also, is ANYBODY watching all those cameras we keep hearing about? Uh...no.

Ya think Esquire knows how indebted the good mayor is to Jannie Blackwell for money and votes? Does editor know the history of Blackwell and her relationship to Carl Green, the RDA and other manipulated organizations that bring great profits to Ms. Blackwell, and therefore the our Mayor? How about the fact that Ms. Blackwell is paid by UPenn, in addition to her salary for city council?

So much bitter comment by the peanut gallery. Nutter has done a good job on most fronts. He's honest, he thinks about the long term, is focused on education and gun violence and he won't sell out to the unions. And how did he beat back all competition to win a second term? He did what had to be done, he's smart and folks know he's working to make a better city.

Mayors really have no control Neighborhood disputes ...with the exception of hiring more police officer's ..which isn't possible when the economy is sucking wind and you have revenue /tax ie budget shortfalls....here is one absolute Fact: in the history of major cities....there has never been a case where a rise in poverty.. and unemployment has coincided with a decrease in crime...just the facts....ie the spike in crime is directly driven by the economy....which can be laid at the feet of the previous Presidential Administration....(investing money that could have been invested domestically in an unnecessary war Iraq...while at the same time lowering taxes to unprecedented levels...ie....creating a deficit that wasn't necessary)

Here we go, your blaming Bush for the problems in philadelphia? Bush didn't lay off middle income, tax paying employees and then hire friends of other politicians. How many heads does Parks and Recreation need. Matter of fact how many Depts have multiple heads making over $100K? Instad of trying to bring down the pension debt why did Nutter decrease the amount the city contributes to the pension fund? Why close fire stations? If we are so broke why did he give his friend the police commisioner a $60K bonus? That money certainly could have helped the pension fund. Sorry sweetie but you are no genius.

Bitter Pangloss? No, it's called taxpayers' freedom of speech and freedom of opinion, peppered with a little common and a non-partisan refusal to drink the kool aid Nutter sold in his campaign. We still have a huge drop out rate, huge unemployment, no jobs, high crime rate, many black homicides, and major corruption, eg PHA, RDA, L&I, Recreation Centers, School Board, too few police, Sheriff's Dept, pay to play,

Problems with the Civil Service system, corruption at city agencies: we can't report on this stuff if we don't have specifics. If you have something we should look into, let us know: my phone is 215-854-5885, or send an email to warnerb@phillynews.com.

Mr Warner, the papers have reported on corruption and many of the politicians responsible just keep getting re-elected.
Do you think that friends of politicians are held accoutable? Look what happened with Wilson Goode Jr and his friend. Nothing changed. That's what happens when only 20% of the city population votes.
