Hybrid heart surgery

When a stress test this summer revealed that Thomas J. Hoey was in danger of a third, perhaps devastating heart attack, the retired music teacher and professional trumpet player, balked at open heart surgery.

Hoey searched for an alternative and found hybrid heart surgery. His story is part of a special joint report on heart care in today’s Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News. That report includes an interactive database on heart hospitals across the eight county region from South Jersey to southeastern Pennsylvania.

Patients who have time to choose where to go for heart care can use the database to help them make more informed decisions.
