Could better mental health care save us money?

Two British proponents of better mental health care will discuss their 2014 book – Thrive: How Better Mental Health Care Transforms Lives and Saves Money – in Philadelphia on Sept. 30. While initially released in the U.K., it has been re-written for an American audience this year.

David Clark, an Oxford psychologist and Richard Layard, an economist and member of the House of Lords, will speak at the evening event sponsored by the Beck Institute and Princeton University Press, and hosted by Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

University of Pennsylvania psychologist Martin Seligman, known for founding the field of positive psychology, will lead a discussion and question-and-answer period.

In their book, Clark and Layard argue that providing more people with effective mental health care would make them happier and save society money.
