St. Joseph’s guard Carl Jones has been named the Atlantic-10 and Big 5 player of the week after scoring a season-high 32 points in Friday’s 96-91 win over Iona.

Jones connected on 12 of 19 field goal attempts, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, and also have five rebounds and four steals.

His previous season high was 24 points in a win over Harvard.

It’s amazing that everybody from Phil Martelli to the players, are suggesting that St. Joseph’s needs to play harder.

Martelli says the team works hard in practice but doesn’t play fast enough.

Whatever the issue, this team has started the season in disappointing fashion, falling to 5-4 following Saturday’s 60-57 loss to Fairfield at Hagan Arena.

St. Joseph’s possesses one of the better six-man rotations in the Atlantic 10. But coach Phil Martelli is reluctant to go any deeper, and knows that he needs to develop some depth as the conference season approaches.

“It’s on me to figure out, we’ve got to get something off of our bench,” Martelli said Tuesday night after the Hawks lost to Villanova, 65-61.

St. Joe’s top six all played 32 minutes or more against the Wildcats. Sophomore forward Papa Ndao was the only other Hawk to see action on the court, playing the last 2 minutes, 26 seconds of the first half after Ronald Roberts picked up his second personal foul.
