YSL names Hedi Slimane new creative director

Hedi Slimane has been appointed creative director of Yves Saint Laurent, parent company PPR announced Wednesday.

Menswear designer-turned-photographer Hedi Slimane has been appointed creative director of Yves Saint Laurent, parent company PPR announced in a statement Wednesday.

Slimane, who has kept a relatively low profile since 2007 after leaving his post as designer of Dior Homme, will temporarily forego his burgeoning career as a photographer to replace the outgoing Stefano Pilati.

Pilati debuted his successful and very-much lauded final collection on Monday at Paris Fashion Week. Speculation surrounding his next role still remains.

Meanwhile, Slimane returns to YSL where he was worked as artistic director of menswear until 2000. Although he's renowned for his work in menswear, Slimane will face new challenges shaping a womenswear collection (which he has never done before), while restoring YSL to a top position in fashion.

However PPR's head honchos aren't too concerned. CEO Paul Deneve says the installation of Slimane as creative director, "heralds a promising new chapter in the story of the maison."

We shall see. Meanwhile, view Pilati's final collection for YSL, below.
