Former Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Rick Santorum is headed to South Carolina to campaign for a conservative candidate for governor next month, a trip sure to fuel the talk that he's toying with a run for president in 2012.

Santorum is scheduled to visit Sun City-Bluffton, Spartanburg and Greenville in support of Republican U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett's bid for governor. South Carolina, of cousre, holds a crucial early primary in the GOP nominating calendar.

"I'm pleased to support a solid conservative for governor of South Carolina," Santorum said in a statement. "I'm also looking forward to visiting with South Carolina families to discuss the issues that matter to them and the future of this country. Too much is at stake to sit back."

In early October, Santorum visited Iowa for stops in Des Moines and Dubuque. Later that month he was headliner at a Right to Life dinner in Grand Rapids, Mich.
