Rendell shoots down latest Obama cabinet buzz

With every vacancy in the Obama cabinet, Gov. Rendell's name seems to get floated out in cyberspace as a contender. And so it was again yesterday when Rendell was asked by a reporter if he was interested in the new vacancy for Commerce Secretary created by Sen. Judd Gregg's sudden withdrawal.

"No pangs," said Rendell, when asked if he had any regrets he was not pursuing the commerce job. "On transportation or energy, maybe mild pangs, but I would have resisted the call."

He said he planned to stay in the executive office through the end of his second term. "Lord willing I will be here until the third week of Jannuary in 2011," said Rendell. "I don't see a circumstance under which I would leave."

Rendell said he heard from a reporter that his name was even being circulated for a job he was "uniquely unqualified" for: Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Said Rendell: "I suggested [state DPW] Secretary [Estelle] Richman."
