Metcalfe says 'lazy' people don't deserve to vote

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe is nothing if not blunt. The Butler County lawmaker lands at the center of almost every controversial issue in the Capitol be it immigration, gun control or voter ID. Now he has inserted himself into the middle of the "47 percent" debate by suggesting, on a Pittsburgh radio broadcast, that Pennsylvania's new voter ID law, which is still being fought over in the courts, will only disenfranchise the "lazy."

Metcalfe says 'lazy' people don't deserve to vote

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe is nothing if not blunt. The Butler County Republican positions himself at the center of almost every controversial issue in the Capitol, be it immigration, gun control or voter ID.

Now he's dived into the middle of the hot "47 percent" debate by suggesting, on a Pittsburgh radio broadcast, that Pennsylvania's new voter ID law, will only disenfranchise the "lazy."

Metcalfe on Wednesday told KDKA Radio that the law, which is still being fought in the courts, may exclude those on the "public dole," like the people GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney referred to in the leaked video taken at a private fundraising event - who are too lazy to go get a proper ID.

Metcalfe, the lead sponsor of the voter ID legislation signed by Gov. Corbett in March, said the burden is on the citizenry to get the documents needed to vote.

When asked about the tens of thousands, if not more Pennsylvanians who may not be able to vote on Nov. 6, Metcalfe cited Romney’s mention of the 47% of the country who will never “take personal responsibility and care for their lives” as evidence that some citizens do not deserve to vote.

HOST: Are you absolutely convinced…that the methods to implement this law are effective and will in fact make sure no legitimate voter will be disenfranchised?

METCALFE: I don’t believe any legitimate voter that actually wants to exercise that right and takes on the according responsiblity that goes with that right to secure their photo ID will be disenfranchised. As Mitt Romney said, 47% of the people that are living off the public dole, living off their neighbors’ hard work, and we have a lot of people out there that are too lazy to get up and get out there and get the ID they need. If individuals are too lazy, the state can’t fix that.

Good point. The law is not only unconstitutional (despite the bogus current supreme court appearing to say otherwise), it's also completely unecessary - not only because there is no voter fraud, but also because the very voters the Republicans are trying to suppress are underrepresented at the polls because of laziness (probably true).

The so-called "lazy" have seen their livelihoods divested and sent overseas. Too many willing souls that want to earn their living have no venue and have also seen their positions on the lower-rungs usurped by illegal/crimigrant labor who'll toil off-the-books for a fraction of what a native-born citizen would to make a minimum go at things.

There are a lot of people commenting here who must not have been born in the 60's. I was, and I recall so many people being chewed on by dogs, being sprayed by water cannons, and being arrested just to give us the rights that we have today. Yet, here we are in 2012 looking at history repeating itself. There are some who think that making comments about being lazy and you shouldn't be able to vote, is some how funny. Those are the same people who would have been setting the dogs loose and aiming those water cannons. There is a mind set that is coming to the fore front once again in the United States, and it is up to the fair minded who refuse to allow those people to consume our society with that hatred. The one way to do that is vote and send them slithering back under the rocks from which they've been hiding.

Guys like this guy are killing the Republican party. They better let it go soon there won't be any old white guys left to listen to the nonsense. The party needs to start speaking the language of the new America or they will become extinct.

We would get rid of them completely except for the fact that they pay for everything.

Explain "limited resources"? If you have the resources to vote you have the resources to get ID, no?

I applaud Metcalf and he is very right. There are area's of concern without touching veterans and social security /diability. Those food stamps are abused so badly by people who get them and sell them. But Mr. Metcalf, it's the very people who work for the government that confirm diasability pensions and veterans. Maybe we should blame them for the mess were in. I get social security and a pension for my 35 years of government service, but if I take a full time job to replace it, what young family couple will be without the very job I take?

    I'll go even further:
    1. As long as someone is drawing benefits from the gvt.,as wards of the state, they should not have the right to vote. Too many parasites simply seek to vote themsleves more and more benefits. Once we reach a figure of 51% of the non tax paying ( which will happen under Obama) they will simply vote to confiscate the income of everyone who actually works and pays taxes.
    2. No one can vote, unless they pass a 150 multiple choice test ( in English) that demonstrates a basic understanding of American History, civics, and basic economics. Free classes and free testing. But you can't vote without achieving a basic competence...and a score of 70% correct to pass.
I'm sure you'll howl at the proposition that the voting public be literate, and possess a rudimentary knowledge of what every citizen should know. But eliminating the truly ignorant will be beneficial to the entire public.

I would be all in favor of having people pass a test in order to be able to vote. According to most statistics, Faux News viewers are consistently the most MISINFORMED. Maybe we can hear more from Sarah Palin about how Paul Revere rode his horse to warn the British

@VoiceofReason50: Hey! Glad you're aboard for my proposition for testing. And in keeping with your critique of Sarah Palin's statements...let us also considere for the curriculum such Obama-isms as:
    1. "I've been to 57 states sofar....one more to go."
    2. " Navy 'corpse-man" Christian Brassard ( misprounounced corpsman....the p is silent, unless you are referring to a dead body"
    3. Obama referred to speaking "Austrian" Uh...no, they speak German in Austria.
I see why all of Obama school and college transcripts are sealed, and his team has spent millions to keep hide his past....making the entire 'tranapreny' thing just a lot of cheap talk and snake oil.

All you lazy people that have valid ID's should forget to take them with you to the poll and cast provisional ballots. Send a copy of your ID with the form you are given at the poll after three or four days and let the County Election Board work their "lazy butts off" for a change to confirm the validity of your right to vote.
