Mass Twitter appeal helps Jim Cramer's dad get PA voter ID

POSTED: Tuesday, September 11, 2012, 10:43 PM

What happens when the 90-year-old father of a New York media star gets caught in Pennsylvania's voter ID web? Well, his son turns to Twitter of course.

At 7:30 this morning Jim Cramer, founder of the Street and host of CNBC's "Mad Money" tweets this plea to his followers:

Jim Cramer@jimcramer

I have a problem. My dad, a vet, won't be allowed to vote in Pa. because he does not drive, he is elderly, and can't prove his citizenship

So Cramer does what any social media-savvy person would do, he takes it to his followers on Twitter...all 567,000 of them.

And then...

Sometime before the close of business on Tuesday, Cramer tweets that the problem has been solved:

PennDot read my Tweet and came directly to the rescue of Pop and did so in a terrific way so he can vote.. Thank you Penndot!

Then Cramer thanks Twitter for "making it right."

Hey look, Pop's 90. He went twice to Motor Vehicles by bus. He waited and waited. He could not wait more. But it has been solved. Thanks 2 u

La22 - Supply us with a list of books that shows us that only Democrats have engaged in voter fraud. And, if "Voting is a precious Right", why isn't a Social Security card an acceptable form of ID? The simplest thing to do - make the Social Security card a picture ID and the problem is solved for anyone who ever holds a legitimate job!

What a nitwit. Maybe he should have contacted PennDOT directly instead of whining to a bunch of internet losers (his twitter followers)? This article isn't news, it isn't even worthy of its own webpage. All it does is show how stupid one person can be. Couloumbis, Worden I think you can do better than this. You won't impress Media Matters with this level of non-news.

Just as Corbett intended. The powerful and connected get taken care of quickly, others not.

The media is working overtime to find these sympathetic cases of people who cant figure out how to get an ID. How about turning this energy towards something more relevant.

Nice try Repuns but this is helping Romney either. You are showing your true colors and Romney is falling farther behind. Just wait until the debates. Romney = No shot !!! LOL . Better start looking for your 2016 canidate because this one is toast!

Look at who the GOP put at the top of the ticket. No wonder they have to steal the election.

Did anyone else notice the "little" shift in the Dem's arguments on this issue. First it was "there is absolutely no proof of any voter fraud so this is a remedy to a problem which doesn't exist." The latest iteration is "there is so little fraud that the law is an over reaction." Sort of like, "I never smoked pot." Then, "OK, I never inhaled." Or "I never had s__ with that woman." Later, it became, "OK, so I did, but so what..?" Or my all time favorite: "Global Warming!!! Global Warming!!! Global Warming!!" (Uhmm,.... Al, we have had the coldest, snowiest winters in years) Oh, wait..... I meant, "Climate Change, Climate Change, Climate Change!!!" I have never seen a political party which has all of its chips down, betting on the stupidity of its constituency.

This is probably the stupidest post I've had the misfortune to read all year.

That your average Republican on this site has willingly convinced themselves that the voter ID law is somehow in their best interest just goes to show how far gone that party is. You can only disenfranchise and disrespect so many groups of people before you eventually erode your entire base. Voter suppression or not, this election isn't going to be close, so what will the GOP do then? The wheels are falling off this party and it's because every move they make narrows their constituency more and more. Oh and FYI, half of the RepubliTrolls you see in the comments section on philly.com are on the GOP payroll trolling as part of their job. This is a fact, I know one of them.

There is nothing wrong with requiring good ID to vote. What is wrong is not allowing enough time for people to get signed up. The Commonwealth should use underemployed employees to get help to people. It is unrealistic to think nobody will be deprived and unrealistic to think no imposters will sneak by. What is required is a good faith effort over a realistic time period with enough resources to get signing materials to those who can't make it to the ID centers. Technology will make this easier. It won't be perfect but insisting on perfection usually results in bad results.
