Gov. Corbett underwent back surgery this morning
Gov. Corbett underwent back surgery this morning in Pittsburgh, and is now recuperating, according to the governor’s office.
Corbett’s procedure was to treat a condition known as spinal stenosis, according to his office. During the time that he was under general anesthesia, Lt. Gov. Jim Cawley served as acting governor. The governor has now resumed his duties.
Corbett is expected to recuperate in the hospital for a day or two, and then work from his home in Shaler, near Pittsburgh, for the rest of the week.
Medical experts and his staff described the condition as "a narrowing of the spinal canal" that compresses the nerves inside and leads to persistent pain. Untreated, the discomfort can lead to permanent damage, they said.
Corbett’s physicians are scheduled to discuss the outcome at a news conference at Allegheny General Hospital today.
Aside from his spinal issues, Corbett is said to be in excellent health, according to a spokesman.
Corbett underwent an angioplasty in 1997, after a mild heart attack.
The state constitution requires that the lieutenant governor serve as governor “in the case of the disability of the governor,” and is to serve “until the disability is removed.”
