Corbett's quick turnaround on gun-show limits

POSTED: Monday, January 7, 2013, 8:38 AM

It took Gov. Corbett six months to announce he had changed his position on the NCAA's penalties against Penn State. It took him a little more than six hours to shift gears on limiting gun shows.

Speaking in response to a listener's question on public radio Friday morning, Corbett said he would consider limiting gun shows at publicly-supported properties such as the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg.

Corbett said that no one had ever suggested the idea to him before.

"It's a good thing to raise and I will give a thought to it," he said on WITF's "Smart Talk."

But by the end of the day, that subject was closed.

The Tribune-Review reports Corbett spokeswoman Janet Kelly issued a statement late Friday saying “there would be no reason to ban (gun shows) on public property, such as the Farm Show building, as they are legitimate business owners conducting business.

"Our policy on these matters remains unchanged,” the statement said.

Corbett did note on the radio program that prospective buyers at gun shows must be cleared through the Pennsylvania State Police instant background check system — just as they are when buying weapons from gun shops.

(Pennsylvania has a smaller gun show "loophole" than other states; all gun purchasers except for long guns must be cleared with a background check).

overreation??!! 26 people died three weeks ago - children!!! 6 people have died in philly this year and it is only the 7th!! The gun laws are flawed - especially gun show laws - there should be comprehensive background checks and severe penalties for having a gun illegally. See how far your second ammendment gets you when some crazy is shooting up another movie theater you moron.

I support Governor Frank Drebin on the gun rights issue. This is about the only issue I'm in agreement with him on.

Taxpaying voter......are you serious? Corbett just did a flip flop and although it was in favor of those of us who believe in the 2nd admendment, dont believe for one second this guy did it because of pressure from the other side. He did it because of pressure from gun owners. Corbett would take away your rights in a heart beat. ONE TERM TOM!!!!!

Wow - where are the bleeding heart liberals? By now I would expect many comments about evil guns. The gunshow loophole in PA is rather tight. Why doesn't the Federal Government ban this dumb loophole. Criminal background checks are a necessity for all gun purchasers. As a gun owner (6 actually) I am for these checks. It's the stupid knew jerk banning without enforcing existing laws that I am against. Oh, school zone; I'd better not carry my illegal firearm here, thank god I saw the sign! Ya right, that works!

The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is a prohibition that prevents the Federal Government from disarming the State militias (National Guard). IT IS NOT A CARTE BLANCH RIGHT FOR EVERY AMERICAN TO HAVE A GUN. If carried to an extreme, every American should have the right to own a tank or a battle ship or a B-52 Bomber. An automatic rifle is in this class of weapon which obviouly should be banned (along with multiple bullet holders); even hunters think automatic rifles should be banned since they would NEVER be used by hunters in shooting an animal.

Your comments show you have NO CLUE what you are even talking about! 'automatic weapons' 'bullet holders'. You CANNOT buy an 'automatic' weapon at a gun show, genius. Would you even know which end the 'bullets' came out of if I handed you any type of rifle?

You mean Pennsylvania, a rural province of the NRA empire has tighter gun control laws than most of the country? Wow. I bet the left still does not realize that in 1966 the first group to propose to establish a national list of mentally ill who would be banned from buying guns was...... the NRA.
