Corbett to unemployed: Get a job
Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Corbett has a message for the unemployed: "get off your duff and go to work."
Corbett, speaking at a campaign appearance in Elizabethtown, told reporters that "the jobs are there," but that many people are purposely remaining unemployed to to collect benefits, according to a report from Pennsylvania Public Radio's Scott Detrow. (Assist from John Micek at Capitol Ideas blog)
Corbett - the two-term attorney general - said business owners across the state are telling him as much.
“One of the issues, and I hear it repeatedly – one of the individuals said, ‘I can’t get workers. People don’t want to come back to work while they still have unemployment.’ They’re literally telling him, ‘I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.’ That’s becoming a problem.”
Corbett added, “The jobs are there. But if we keep extending unemployment, people are just going to sit there ... I’ve literally had construction companies tell me, I can’t get people to come back to work until…they say, 'I’ll come back to work when unemployment runs out.'”

Corbett is a grade A moron and I'm a die hard Republican. Unemployment pays a pittance of what a job does. People are not living large on what the state provides. "The jobs are there" LOL. Hey Corbett I'll tell you what is NOT there for you. My vote. monkeyboy901
Mr. Corbett, I can understand how you feel, however choose your words wisely. One company cannot provide a job for every unemployed civilian. I can't believe the way this country is turned out to be. You do your job for this country with no pride but anticipation and your figures that you earn every year. I know you worked very hard to get where your at, but maybe every one else didn't have that opportunity. Here's something for you, since you (leaders of our land) make poor judgements and decisions, maybe this is a logic and simple solution to this situation; when you mail you claims in, provide a copy of an application. regardless if its online, or in person. No copy of an application, no pay. You will see then if the people are sitting back or if the jobs are hiring. Good day too you. carlos candelaria
This just shows how completely out of touch Corbett is when it comes to the ordinary working families of Pennsylvania. union guy- I know a few people that are saying the same thing. i make more on unemployment,no day care and no travel expenses. If it cost you 200 a week for daycare and you are getting 500 a week unemployment, that's 700 a week.
- I'm sure he's concerned about the deficit like all the other Republicans - at the moment. They never mentioned the "D" word while Cheney/Bush were running it up - something about tax breaks for people of a certain income level? - but now the deficit that President Obama inherited is suddenly a major concern.
- Hey Visto Todo wake up, we were concerned about the deficit then and even more now. Pres. Obama has tripled the deficit in what 19 months. Corbett is an idiot even if that is what you believe you dont say it, yea just like welfare some people are abusing the system. I told people to vote for Sam Rohrer, Corbett will lose and we will be stuck with another liberal in Pa....Thanks Corbett. skills
- Thank You Tom "Space Cadet" Corbett, the slush fund from BP called, and they want you to adjust the transmitter in your brain so you can repeat all of the other terrible truths the gov'mint dont wanyo ta Know! Did you know that the biggest threat to PA is not organized crime, terrorists, the total collapse of manufacturing, construction, lending and the absence of a good 5 cent cigar but the next Democrat that you vote for? Whoever or what ever office! And then the secret Muslim foreign born sleeper agents will pop on school boards and tell our children all about sex. Really, it's the truth and only a vote for republicans can stop the government take over of public spending.
One of the most outrageous comments I've ever heard out of the mouth of a politician. Corbett needs to learn that the plural of an anecdote is not data. I'm sure that the vast numbers of UNDERemployed in this state would sing a different tune as well. waitandsee
Good morning from East Falls: Be honest, i would be suprised if anyone does not know of someone just collecting and not seriously looking for a job. Old days you had to prove you were actively looking. too easy to take other peoples money. Diogenese Henry Wittman, III- Corbett is another republican loon who hates the miidle class. This POS is another non-caring out of touch politican. Almost half the people I know have suufered a job related cutback or a job loss and this idiot tells you that there are jobs out there. timagain

Too bad his job isn't outsourced. The Government would could cut the deficit. Eric
The truth is somewhere in the middle. Some people look hard for work but there is nothing there. Others, and I've know several, do not look at all until the unemployment is about to run out. Depends on one's situation. If you are single with kids, you don't have much choice but to get a job. Others may have more options. At some point, you need to either take a job at much less than you were earning (I had to) or you need to be willing to relocate robtpenn
Best advice yet. 3 of my neighbors sit and collect unemployment benefits going on for well over a year. Unemployment benefits have somehow become a sort of welfare benefits package. There is an added 'good feeling' of actually working of doing something, even if it is not in your field that you once worked in, of just working or producing something, that you will not get in sitting collecting unemployment and waitin for the job market to rebound for your field if that ever happens again, which chances are good that it may not. These are times to try something new, reinvent yourself, or seek work as a waiter, or at McDonalds or Walmart to just work. uandwhosearmy
