Corbett to sue NCAA over Penn State sanctions
Gov. Corbett said today he will file suit against the NCAA over what he called "illegal sanctions" it imposed on Penn State as a result of its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
Corbett said in a brief press release he will provide details of the federal lawsuit Wednesday in State College.
The NCAA fined Penn State $60 million, banned its football team from four years of bowl games and vacated years of team wins over its handling of the Sandusky case.
The sanctions came following a report released last summer by former FBI director Louis Freeh which concluded that university administrators had engaged in a cover-up to protect Sandusky.
Penn State board of trustees, of which Corbett is a member, gave its approval of the report shortly after its release.
Former Penn State President Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have been charged in the Sandusky case, accused of child endangerment and other crimes.
State Sen. Jake Corman announced legislation last week that would restrict Penn State's fine money to be used to combat sex abuse in Pennsylvania.
The NCAA has said only as much as 25 percent of Penn State’s $60 million fine will be used for sexual abuse prevention in Pennsylvania.
Penn State recently made the first payment of $12 million. Corman said he also is planning to seek an injunction to halt that payment until the dispute with the NCAA is resolved.
Sandusky is serving a 30 to 60-year prison term after being convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys, several of them were abused on the Penn State campus.

There NO DETAIL about what Gov. Corbett wants to sue about other than he claims "illegal sanctions". Many are assuming they know!
It would have been nice if the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the legislators were so ready to help the abused kids in general!
How about passing some of the legislation dealing with abused kids such as increasing the window for prosecuting pedophiles and/or filing lawsuits!
Oh, I forgot, the Catholic Church is against that one, we don't want to upset those paragons of virtue! Also, that might cause problems for the other paragon of virtue: Penn State!

The NCAA is rotten to its core. joedog- Really? Would you mind telling me how and how you think that Corbett spending the taxpayer's money for a moot point is OK? Sorry, the NCAA actually did something and you don't like it...PSU is a joke.

Corbett wants to deflect attention from his own failure to investigate Penn State when he was Attorney General. Now he wants to score more points with Penn State alumni to make them forget his shameful conduct. Hope Kane has a full investigation of this creep. poogie
Aside from the multitude of potential political motivations, I'm glad the NCAA is getting some pushback. The clown Emmert didn't even follow NCAA protocol by making the decision at the executive level, there were no NCAA violations (their sole purview here), and they relied solely on the Freeh Report, which, if you read it, is more inference and innuendo than factual documentation of malice and intent. I'd say Emmert and the NCAA were the real grandstanders in this sad saga. Who made them judge, jury and executioner? What I find most disturbing is how the media have accepted the Freeh Report as the definitive word on the Sandusky matter. If you doubt that, just read the articles in the national media; they accept Freeh as the oracle of truth and the final word about the parties other than Sandusky. Who cares what may happen in a court of law? ijj
Frivolous lawsuits seem to be a lesser hobby for the Guv. Good luck Guv and be thankful a fee shifting statute doesn't cover the matter. Tkat
WASTE OF TAXPAYERS MONEY!!! Noklu
So, Corbett was dreaming over the Christmas Holiday's & suddendly he comes up with brilliant idea. REALLY, REALLY ? To sue the NCAA over how they will spend the $60 million dollars. Hmmmm, I smell a rat ! Why is he doing this? Is he upset that only $15 million will be spent in the STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA on sexual abuse prevention? That is a lot of cash! But he wants all of it because ALL OF IT CAME FROM PA. TAXPAYER'S ? Make's sense. But I still smell a rat. Here's what I think...Sandusky & his Band of Merry Co-conspirator's, were fully emershed in the illegal sexual exploitation & molestation, that they took it off campus. Yes, consider, all the PSU AWAY GAMES & BOWL APPEARANCES that SANDUSKY ATTENDED along with ALL THE CITIES & TOWNS THEY VISITED...DO YOU THINK FOR ONE PSU TIMEOUT THAT SANDUSKY WAS A GOOD OL BOY ON THESE TRIPS....I THINK NOT! That's is why the majority of the money needs be soread around the country. Because WE DO NOT KNOW HOW MANY MORE YOUNG BOYS SANDUSKY VIOLATED ALONG THE WAY. frank castle- Who does Corbett represent? I thought he's our governor. Why is he spending time with PSU business? Is he still on the board? If so, he's late. Scary to think about his catching up with other business of the state, as in us, the citizens of PA. And anyway, children often suffer for the sins of the father. The point is is that the fathers do what they're supposed to do. In the whole Sandusky mess many fathers failed the children. Hopefully the children will do better. ptahan
Yep, I'm glad this is what he cares about and spends his time on...what a joke! I can't wait to vote this guy out... Doho2008

i played college baseball. every semester we had to sit through like a 7 hr recording listening to the ncaa rules. In it they make the point numerous times that no player, team or school with be punished until the ncaa does their due diligence and then the decisions are based on the board of the ncaa.
I graduated in 08. But I can't imagine the rules on that stuff changed that much. Ncaa spent a lot of time preaching to us how they follow the rules and don't waver no matter what. obviously this is brand new issue, but Emmerit seemed to disregard every single rule he's supposed to follow. Less than 24 yrs after the freech report he penalizes psu. Is there any way he actually read the report. ebb5000- *24 hrs

Why didn't Corbett come forward with the charges before he left office to run for governor? We all know the answer to that. I say just give them the death penalty and be done with it! Then lets see if Penn State can survive that...it will but with a lot of cuts since there would be much less revenue. Thisisphilly
