Corbett to sue NCAA over Penn State sanctions

Gov. Corbett said today he will file suit against the NCAA over what he called "illegal sanctions" it imposed on Penn State as a result of its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Corbett said in a brief press release he will provide details of the federal lawsuit Wednesday in State College.

The NCAA fined Penn State $60 million, banned its football team from four years of bowl games and vacated years of team wins over its handling of the Sandusky case.

The sanctions came following a report released last summer by former FBI director Louis Freeh which concluded that university administrators had engaged in a cover-up to protect Sandusky.

Penn State board of trustees, of which Corbett is a member, gave its approval of the report shortly after its release.

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz have been charged in the Sandusky case, accused of child endangerment and other crimes.

State Sen. Jake Corman announced legislation last week that would restrict Penn State's fine money to be used to combat sex abuse in Pennsylvania.

The NCAA has said only as much as 25 percent of Penn State’s $60 million fine will be used for sexual abuse prevention in Pennsylvania.

Penn State recently made the first payment of $12 million. Corman said he also is planning to seek an injunction to halt that payment until the dispute with the NCAA is resolved.

Sandusky is serving a 30 to 60-year prison term after being convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys, several of them were abused on the Penn State campus.

Where was Attorney General Corbett when he had the Authority to investigate Sandusky and Penn State? He was more interested in running for Governor. Maybe if he had done his job as AG, PSU wouldnt be in this jam!

Philly, it wasn't Corbett's fault as to what happened! Too many people are blaming everyone but Sandusky who is the only one at fault. It's good to see Corbett is going after the NCAA. The players are the ones who really got hurt.

The children were the ones who really got hurt. Hopefully they will get some cash to salve their injuries.

The players were collateral damage and that is a shame for them. And to penalize them is an example of a fundamentally impotent NCAA who found a case that gave them an opportunity for a fleeting erection.

As for Corebutt, this ploy is strictly a smoke screen to divert attention from his incompetent handling of the investigation and the political decisions he made that prolonged the potential for more harm to little children. All of sudden finds some cojones to block NCAA sanctions? Let's keep in mind that he strongly, STRONGLY! approved and supported the sanctions against PSU, at the time.

Corebutt is again demonstrating what a poor excuse for a man and a goobernor he is.

Actually, I think the kids who were raped on the Penn State Campus were the ones who really got hurt.

I trust you are just misinformed, not just stupid. What really made this the scandal it became was the fault of so many people in power ignoring the sexual abuse or covering it up, essentially tolerating and enabling it. I don't know of ANYONE who blames "everyone but Sandusky." That's ridiculous.

Where was Corbett when the Trustees approved the report and stepped over each other to accept the sanctions? Has anybody explained how the NCAA has the power to impose those sanctions for what was really a violation of the crimes code?

This alone proves that Corbett is VERY guilty in all of this mess. When he was Attorney General and this case landed on his desk back in 2008, he assigned just one state cop to investigate. Corbett knew that if he alienated Penn State voters he wouldn't have won the 2010 governor election.

I can't wait for Kathleen Kane to be sworn in as Attorney General. Corbett hopes by coming out swinging first with the lawsuit against the NCAA that PSU fans will rally behind him. But I don't think that's going to help. Corbett knew about Sandusky's crimes and even accepted campaign donations from Sandusky's charity. If Joe Paterno had to lose his job because of this I think Corbett should too!

Excuse me Vet but more people are responsible. Many higher ups knew of the issues and did nothing. At least Sandusky has an excuse . He's a psychotic pedophile. The others were sane and chose to ignore or cover it up.

When is Corbett going to come clean about his involvement in the coverup? He had the chance to prosecute Sandusky but decided to look the other way because he did not want to risk losing the Penn State alumni vote.

He sat on this case for how long as Attorney General, and now he's going to sue the NCAA over sanctions? Give me a break.

Glad more taxpayers dollars will be wasted on this. I wonder which rich donor convinced him to do this?
