Corbett says gas drilling - on campus - could save colleges

POSTED: Thursday, April 28, 2011, 3:14 PM

Gov. Corbett has proposed a novel solution to the higher education funding crisis: drilling for dollars.

Not a gas tax, mind you but gas rigs, right on campus.

Corbett told the Pennsylvania Association of Councils of Trustees today that schools could address revenue shortfalls by tapping into the riches of the Marcellus Shale beneath their campuses.

Corbett said six campuses in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education sit on the lucrative Marcellus shale natural gas formation, The Erie Times reported.

Corbett has proposed slicing some $550 million or fifty percent of state funding for colleges and universities in his 2011-2012 spending plan.

The governor was speaking at Edinboro University as part of a tour of the northwest to promote his budget proposal.

Regardless of the quality of this idea, which I'm not entirely sure wasn't taken out of context. I am convinced colleges don't do anything worthwhile with the state funding they receive. Tuition has only gone up regardless of the funding with no appreciable increase in quality. And doesn't the president of PSU make some crazy amount of money?

This smells like a hit piece, but then again, Corbett DID tell us last summer that Pennsylvanians would rather be unemployed than take the plethora of jobs just waiting for them.

Gov. Corbett is only doing what his masters at the gas companies tell him to do. DRILL BABY DRILL!!! Remember that gave him money to help him get into office and now they own him. politicians are like prostitutes give them money and they hop in bed with you and do whatever you want. Look how he is not taxing the gas companies but his state needs money for schools . Great job Corbett your Masters are pleased.

Unfortunately, PA doesn't have a means of recalling corrupt governors. So they're stuck with him.

What a joke Corbett is turning out to be. He has done absolutely nothing for this state since taking office.

it's easy for a man to believe in a lie if his paycheck is dependent on believing it.

I remember when he ran for AG and the major part of his platform was he was going to be tough on pedophiles. Now there was a profile in courage...
