Bill George to retire as president of the state AFL-CIO

Bill George, the president of Pennsylvania's AFL-CIO for two decades and a giant figure in state politics, says he is going to step down at the group's convention in April.

George made the startling announcement Sunday on The Rick Smith Show, on WHYL-AM 960 in Carlisle. Smith's labor-oriented show runs on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

"You know I hope to have a great new election and move on," George said, adding that he has been a union member for 50 years. "I am going to stay involved and have a lot more flexibility and less constraints on me."

Said Smith: "I'm dumbfounded. Bill George has been the face and voice of labor here in this state for years."
