Mitt's pick of a VP

(A brief discussion twixt Baer & Baer's editor, a.k.a. BE)

JB: Well, boss, time for Mitt to pick a running mate.

BE: As if that ever matters.

JB: Hey, LBJ helped JFK. Palin hurt McCain. And Lieberman brought Gore "Joe-mentum."

BE: Yeah? How'd that work out?

JB: Point is the pick matters.

BE: Maybe in the sense you try to do no harm.

JB: I dunno, this year, there's that gender gap. And the need to attract voters in the south.

BE: So, what? Dolly Parton?

JB: Well, Ireland's largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, has odds on the pick. Top three are Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (2/1), Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (5/1) and New Mexico Guv. Susana Martinez (11/2).

BE: What about my boy Rick?

JB: 20/1.

BE: So you're sayin' there's a chance.

JB: I'm saying Mitt's gotta pick somebody, and conservative columnist George Will says it oughta be somebody really smart and willing to fight for unpopular stuff such as slowing the growth of government entitlements.

BE: So who does Will like?

JB: Wisconsin Congressman and House budget boss Paul Ryan or Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. Has high praise for both in his latest column.

BE: How do either help with the gender gap?

JB: Will thinks pandering to groups or regions isn't as important as solid fiscal smarts and drive.

BE: And I think 20/1 isn't THAT much of a long-shot.

JB: And I think...grrrr.
