Lettuce seedlings....coming along!

Welcome to the Veggie Chronicles! I hope lots of people weigh in with their own experiences.

Over the weekend, I kept an eye on the lettuce sprouts in tubs on my back patio. They needed protection from the cold, but otherwise look good. Inside, I didn't plant any new vegetables per se. But I planted a flat of marigolds, which if all goes according to plan, will protect the veggies from some bugs, and maybe even deer.

Meanwhile, the New York Times had a story Saturday about the organic and local food movement: Is a Food Revolution Now in Season?

And for those who prefer to go the route of farmers' markets and CSAs, the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture has a great list. Enter your zip code and it will tell you what's nearby. I have never found a central list of New Jersey markets and farms, but for starters, check out the list maintained by Slow Food Northern New Jersey.

One of the most active regional groups around has got to be Farm to City, a Philadelphia program whose goal is "to unite communities, families, and farmers year-round through good locally grown food." Their site lists CSAs, buying clubs, markets and more.

Hi Sandy: On behalf of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, thank you for your article this morning on the rewards of a home vegetable garden. We too were excited by the news of the Obamas joining the national trend of growing their own vegetables. We just wanted to let folks know if they are interested in learning how to start their own gardens or get more from their gardens, PHS has several workshops coming up this spring, including a hands-on intensive vegetable gardening workshop on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Saul High School of Agricultural Sciences, 7100 Henry Ave. The workshop will be held on the farm side of Henry Avenue. To register, please contact Sally McCabe at gardentenders@pennhort.org. For a full list of workshops, please visit www.pennsylvaniahorticulturalsociety.org.

Seeing the lettuce seedlings is getting me all happy for spring. I can't wait to get started with my small, but mighty city rooftop garden! I'm just here to spread the word that you don't need a lot of space to start a home garden. Sure, it's not as big as I would like it to be, but I do have eggplants, tomatoes, carrots, strawberries, peppers, and an assortmet of herbs all growing in pots on a little 3" x 12" space. I get quite a harvest; there is always plenty to share with friends and family. The rewards of a home garden are innumerable!
