Are you participating in Earth Hour this Saturday? (www.earthhour.org)
If so, post a comment here with the information and let everyone know about it.
Among the places I know about so far, the staff at Fairmount’s historic jewel, the Eastern State Penitentiary, is turning off the dramatic uplights along the massive stone walls.
Also, the Cira Centre is turning off those colored LED lights that dot the outside surface of the building.
Members of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Lighting Council have been mulling how to participate. Their concerns include light pollution, which I wrote about earlier this year. See the story here.
Afraid of the mercury in CFLs. Wanted to share an unauthorized experiment of CFL strength. My son knocked over a table lamp with a CFL and it hit the floor. The frame of the shade bent, the stem of the lamp itself bent beyond repair, but the bulb was unbroken and is still working. It appears to me that the glass is much thicker and therefore tougher than incandescent bulbs, which shatter so easily. CeladonMom
Check out two good websites for purchasing CFLs of different strengths, shapes and sizes: Topbulb.com is a favorite; have ordered from them 3 times. If you can't find what you want, you can call the really helpful phone support; they will discuss your light fixtures and uses and recommend bulbs. 1000bulbs.com also has a lot to choose from. From these sites, you can find many, many shapes, sizes, wattage choices, color categories, dimmables and even CFL bug-repelling lights. CeladonMom
