Host Temple will lead a field of 17 teams participating in the Temple Invitational golf tournament to be held Saturday and Sunday at Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon Valley.
Owls sophomore Brandon Matthews won the individual championship last year, when the event was the Big Five Invitational. Matthews enjoyed a tremendous summer in 2013, winning player of the year honors in the Golf Association of Philadelphia, reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur and earning alternate status at the U.S. Open at Merion.
Big Five schools La Salle, Penn and St. Joseph’s also are entered in the 36-hole event.
Three of the tournament entries – Cincinnati, Richmond and St. John’s – are ranked in the Top 100 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Ratings. Hartford’s Evan Russell is the highest-rated player, at No. 57.
Russell shot 150 at Philmont last year, helping lead the Hawks to the team title of the Big Five Invitational.
Local players competing for out-of-town schools include Princeton senior Greg Jarmas (Lower Merion), Brown senior Nelson Hargrove (Haverford School) and two freshmen from Dartmouth – Sean Fahey (Episcopal Academy) and Scott Jaster (Haverford School).
