Make game day strategy for staying fit

Knee deep in football season already, do you feel like your own fitness and diet goals are taking a hit with all the tailgating and football-watching parties you have been attending?

Knee deep in football season already, do you feel like your own fitness and diet goals are taking a hit with all the tailgating and football-watching parties you have been attending? Super Bowl Sunday is still months away, and you don't want to backtrack on your own training because you are cheering the Eagles along. Whether you are training for a marathon or have your own big game coming up, sticking to your own goals is important.

Don't worry though, no one is asking you to forgo Sunday afternoon football or Monday night football, or football any day for that matter. Instead have your own game day plan for attacking all those extra calories and hours sitting in front of the television. Strategy and mindfulness is not just for the players on the field, but for everyone at home and in the stadium seats as well.

Lindsey Kane, registered dietitian and Healthy Eating Specialist, offered some great strategies last Super Bowl that work well for regular season too. Use the following tips to plan ahead so you don't fumble your health and fitness goals this football season.

Fill your fuel tank before the game. Eat well all day so you are not as hungry for snacks during game time.

Make exercise a priority. Don't take the day off from exercise. If it is a night game and you usually work out after you clock out, rise a little earlier to squeeze it in. Get up and stretch during game timeouts and half-time. Afternoon game? Head outside for a quick game of your own. Or challenge your friends to an exercise competition. See who can do the most jumping jacks or planks during commercial breaks.

Drink responsibly. While having a few beers with your friends during the game can be a lot fun and a stress-reliever from all your work and family responsibilities, try to be careful of sabotaging your normally healthy lifestyle. Kane recommends drinking a glass of water for every beverage you consume. Not only will you drink less, but you probably won't reach for those chips and dip as much either!

Cook up something in the kitchen. Watching the game at a friend's? Bring your own healthy snack like chili that is a nice combo of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables. Kane's favorite picks are Bison Chili and a Quick and Easy Veggie Chili.

Focus on mindful eating. Instead of grazing while your eyes are peeled to the screen, be very intentional with what you put in your mouth and chew slowly to savor the food longer. Always eat more of the healthy choices than the junk food.

Now, are we ready for some more football?
