Enjoy your summer breakfast

You’ve probably spent time flipping through Cosmopolitan and Esquire for the season’s hottest bikinis, board shorts and sunglasses. But this summer’s best accessory is a great beach body. If you want a healthy body to accompany the cool summer fashion, look no further. Over the next few months, I'll fill you in on what your body needs to feel good all summer long.

Let’s start at the beginning: Breakfast is the most overlooked meal of the day. I get it - life is demanding, work is demanding, and you don't have any time to cook the lavish, hardy meals your body would like. Try these easy ideas to jump on the breakfast bandwagon and help you feel great:

Don't sleep the day away
Summer is generally a time for freedom, adventure and exploration. Sleeping the day away limits the time you have to do that. Instead of sleeping in until noon, shoot for a 9 or 10 a.m. wake-up call. For many, that still means sleeping in. For you night owls, I know that summer is your time to be out and about into the wee hours of the morning, but a wise woman once said, "Nothing good ever happens past midnight.”

Keep your breakfast simple
Carbs, proteins and fruit should be your three best friends at breakfast time. There are a million ways to incorporate them into breakfast, but foods like eggs, oatmeal, bread, berries and bananas will make your grocery list headache-free.

Cook if you can
Like I’ve mentioned before, cooking is always healthier than eating out. IHOP and McDonalds are convenient (and probably right down the street) but they also come with a lot of health baggage. Give yourself the time to shop for and prepare the foods you want to eat.

Listen to your body
Notice how I said listen to your body and not "Listen to your belly". Oftentimes our bellies can be deceiving and will tell us that we need more or less than we actually do. A general rule of thumb is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day because it gets us off the ground and running. If you're skipping breakfast to get your day started more quickly, STOP! If you want to have the energy to enjoy your whole summer, make your first meal of the day a priority.

Share with someone
There's nothing better than starting the day with a meal surrounded by people you care about. If you love to cook, put a little extra love into the day by whipping up some food for your household. If you live alone, invite a friend over for a good meal and some good company. Those of you that love your bed, let the aroma of fresh smelling eggs and bacon wake you up. It’s okay, your bed will still be there when you get back.

As always, new habits are challenging to make stick. But doing your best to implement them will help them become a normal part of your daily routine. Enjoy your summer!
